Frost was rewarded with a new two-year contract worth $4.2 million ($2.1 million AAV). This was a great deal for both Frost and Flyers. He didn’t want to miss one day of camp, thus getting on the bad side of John Tortorella.
Morgan Frost missed an entire developmental season in 2020 due to an injury, so in 2021-22 he transitioned back and forth between the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and the Flyers. He had consistency problems and timing issues throughout his NHL career, mainly due to missing time and a developmental stand still. However, that was then and this past season amassed 46 points in 81 games played (19g,27a). He was consistent, for the most part, and really showed promise for this young rebuilding Flyers team.Frost is arguably one of the most talented forwards the Flyers have at this time. He can make something out of nothing, as he has good on-ice awareness. Frost has a ton of skill, and his hands remind of Claude Giroux’s with the way he razzles and passes the puck.
The good thing is, Frost should gain much confidence after a very good season, finally, for the orange and black. This new contract was supposed to be a confidence boosting contract for the young 24-year-old and one the Flyers would hope to be cost saving for a potential 50-70 point producer, possibly more. A three-year deal just didn’t make sense with Frost only being 24-years-old it would have taken Frost out of Restricted Free Agent status (27-years-old) when the contract would expire.
Unfortunately, John Tortorella thought it should be best that Morgan Frost is benched for tonight’s home opener. Sean Couturier will indeed play, and both Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink will play tonight. In addition, Scott Laughton will now move back to the center position, in lieu of Frost. This head scratching, it’s only two games into the season. Tortorella did bench Frost in Toronto last season, and he came back with authority. He may be looking for the same results from Frost.
Frost has made some sharp plays in the young season, but he has been inconsistent. Again it’s just two games into the season, and now the thoughts of a bad relationship with Tortorella and Frost resonate again.
Again Frost was oozing with confidence after a benching in Toronto. He became physical, and more often than not made tape to tape passes. Frost wound up being a top point producer for the orange and black. Let’s see how things go, but this is a bit Head scratching for sure.
