Garnet Hathaway was no stranger to the Flyers when he first signed with the teamin the Summer. I mean he’s had some battles with Sean Couturier and the Flyers in particular since he played for the Washington Capitals for four seasons dating back to the 2019-20 season.

“For Sean and a lot of the guys, I think it’s a lot better to be on the same side after battling against those guys for so many years. I’m excited to get to know Sean and see him as a player on the other side,” Hathaway said before training camp began.
Hathaway continued, “It’s always difficult to go up against him. So to see him, especially in training camp and as we go throughout the season, really be competitive, and battle in practice, but then be able to celebrate when he does something on the ice positive. I’m looking forward to that.”
A veteran in Hathaway logs big minutes. He never puts up crazy numbers offensively, although he posted 14 goals in 2021-22. His physical presence and agitating style of play is a huge asset for a young Flyers team that is still working at playing the way John Tortorella likes.
Even though Hathaway is no longer a Washington Capital there is a huge Hathaway fan that just recently celebrated Hathaway’s 32nd birthday.
Meet 8-year-old Troy, who is now a partial Flyers fan because Hathaway plays for them. Troy loves Hathaway, and he made it to training camp this past fall to see Hathaway in a Flyers uniform. Believe it or not, Hathaway remains an important figure for Troy, and I think it’s great that he has somebody to look up to.
All pictures for this article are from Troy’s mom Jenn.. Hathaway remains a pillar in the community, and he is touched so many in Washington area. Maybe that is what led Troy to Garnet .During Hathaway’s tenure with the Washington Capitals, Hathaway started an organization called Hath’s Heroes, Hath’s Heroes, to which, “Has donated more than $40,000 to the local organizations D.C. Fire & EMS Foundation and Mindful Junkie. The funds, raised by Caps fans during Hathaway’s tenure in D.C., will be used by both nonprofits in support of mental health programming for first responders,” per the Washington Capitals (From an article on Washington Capitals.com, see article below)
This bond that Troy has with Hathaway could be an everlasting one. He’s Hathaway’s biggest fan, for good reason. Hathaway is a pillar in the community and always thinks of other people.
Hathaway did his homework and sought out former players who once played for John Tortorella, according to Hathaway. Hathaway just wanted to ensure Philly and Tortorella were the right fit, “I talked to a lot of guys from different stages in their career and different teams that they had played for him (John Tortorella). It was a lot of what you hear from guys who (Currently) play for him now. A very honest coach, not someone who is going to sugar coat things, but is going to demand the best out of you effort wise.”
