Matvei Michkov has consistently shown a fierce drive to win, a trait that’s defined his young hockey career. In an exclusive interview with The RG Media on May 16, 2025, Michkov expressed his frustration with losing, stating, “I’m tired of losing. I want to win,” after a standout NHL rookie season with the Flyers where he tallied 60 points (26 goals, 34 assists) in 82 games. His competitive mindset was evident early, as he set scoring records in Russia’s youth leagues, including 109 points in 26 games in the under-16 league and 56 points in 56 games in the under-20 division, surpassing Nikita Kucherov’s record.

“I really want our team to make the playoffs every year and fight for the Stanley Cup.” – Michkov told RG Media.

Despite his individual success, Michkov’s hunger for team victories shines through. During his 2024-25 season with the Flyers, he led all NHL rookies in goals and tied for the points lead among rookie forwards with 63, yet he was vocal about his dissatisfaction with the team missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Flyers’ General Manager Danny Brière noted Michkov’s meticulous preparation, arriving at his season debriefing with a detailed plan to improve, a rare trait for a 20-year-old. Teammate Travis Konecny praised his ambition, saying Michkov believes he can be the NHL’s best player and has the mindset to back it up.

The Hiring of Rick Tocchet

“A new coach always means a fresh start. I don’t know him personally, so I can’t say much yet,” Michkov told RG Media. “The main thing is that the team improves and makes the playoffs. I just hope I’ll have freedom on the ice. When I feel limited, I start focusing on the wrong things.”

Michkov continues his interview with RG Media, “But honestly, I’ll do whatever the coach says. The most important thing is for the team to reach the playoffs. If I have fewer points, but the team makes the playoffs, I’ll take that over having more points and missing the playoffs. I’m tired of losing. I want to win.”

Former Head Coach John Tortorella

Michkov spoke highly of John Tortorella following his departure from the club, ‘For my first NHL season, Tortorella was probably the best coach I could’ve had. From day one, he explained everything clearly and was always honest with me,” Michkov said to RG Media.

“Sure, sometimes we disagreed or even argued — that’s normal. But we always talked things out face to face. We had a great relationship, and I’m very grateful for what he taught me.” – Michkov said to RG Media

Michkov’s clutch performances further highlight his winning mentality. He became the fourth teenager in NHL history to score three overtime goals, joining legends like Sidney Crosby, and was named the NHL’s rookie of the month for October 2024 after posting nine points in 11 games. Michhkov’s relentless pursuit of victory, paired with his elite skill, makes him a player who not only wants to win but often wills it to happen.

“I just want to have ice time and not feel restricted. That’s when I play my best,” Michkov said to RG Media. That I’m sure will be the main priority with new Head Coach Rick Tocchet, get Michkov more ice time.
