Flyers’ Head Coach Rick Tocchet expressed delight at the news that young star Matvei Michkov plans to train in Voorhees, New Jersey, the site of the team’s practice facility next Summer, rather than returning home to Russia for an extended period.

This comes amid Michkov’s recent hot streak—he’s tallied four goals and seven points in his last seven games—after a slower start to the 2025-26 season hampered by an offseason ankle injury and subpar conditioning.
In a December 4, 2025, interview with reporters, Michkov shared his updated plans to Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia: “I think I will start training here (Voorhees next Summer). Maybe will go home for (Short time).”
Tocchet, who’s been coaching Michkov through adjustments like shifting him to Left Wing to encourage a more direct “North-South” style, praised the decision as a sign of maturity.

“As a young kid, you always look at options to get better. There’s a lot of good options around here to get better. If that’s his choice we will help him,” Tocchet said post-practice. This aligns with the Flyers’ patient development approach under Tocchet, who replaced John Tortorella and has emphasized communication and team play with the 21-year-old Russian phenom.
Michkov, entering his second NHL season after a strong 63 point rookie year, also intends to stay sharp during the February Olympic break in Voorhees, to train for the rest of the season.
In the end, his training plans for the Olympic Break and next Summer is music to the ears for the Flyers brain trust.
