Flyer Matvei Michkov
Matvei Michkov is a young star forward for the Philadelphia Flyers, and Rick Tocchet is the team’s head coach (he previously coached the Vancouver Canucks before joining Philly). Their relationship has been a major talking point this season (2025-26), particularly around Michkov’s performance, ice time, and conditioning.

Michkov, a highly touted prospect and 2023 draft pick, had a strong rookie year but has faced a sophomore slump with reduced scoring and limited minutes under Tocchet. Tocchet has been publicly critical of Michkov, especially early in the season, stating that Michkov “Did not come into camp in shape” and that “It’s hard to play yourself into shape.” This has been repeated in recent comments, including explanations for Michkov’s low ice time (e.g., a season-low around 10 minutes in some games).
Tocchet has also noted issues with Michkov’s skating, separation in corners, and adjustment to a north-south game style, saying things like “he’s just kind of stuck in mud sometimes” and that the team needs to work on getting him more separation. This has sparked controversy:

- Some fans and analysts accuse Tocchet of “Tough love” that’s gone too far, potentially demoralizing the 21-year-old player by repeatedly highlighting conditioning months later.
- Others defend Tocchet’s honesty and demands for accountability, especially as the Flyers have had team success in stretches despite Michkov’s struggles.
- There have been viral moments, like bench conversations between them and Tocchet getting frustrated with media for asking too many Michkov-related questions (e.g., “I’ve answered six Michkov questions. Enough’s enough”).
- Comparisons have been drawn to Tocchet’s time in Vancouver, where he was tough on players like Elias Pettersson, or his time with the Coyotes with Clayton Keller.
Overall, it’s a high-profile coach-player dynamic with tension over development, playing time, and public criticism—common in the NHL but amplified because Michkov is seen as a franchise cornerstone, so why air his dirty laundry of missing treatments, or continuously repeating that he came into camp in bad shape? This type of stuff should remain inside the locker room, but to no avail it hasn’t. The season is nearly three quarters of the way through, and people are still hearing he came into camp in bad shape. With all due respect, it’s time to move on coach.
