Louie Belpedio was one of the final cuts in training camp, so obviously the Flyers thought very highly of him at that particular time. Fast forward to his most recent recall with the orange and black, and he impressed in his brief appearances with the club. He has suited up with the club 12 times, and generated two goals and two assists for his efforts.
He makes plays, and can give a little offensively, as well. He was signed by Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere to a two-year $1.85 million contract this past offseason. That is how much the Flyers think of him, especially being a seasoned veteran on the backend. Louie also helped groom the youth in his brief stint, not only in Philadelphia, but Lehigh, as well. He wore #37, former Flyers’ Eric Desjardins old number, and wore it proud.
Belpedio did clear waivers, and will head back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms with his head up high. He didn’t pout, and Belpedio knows that he heads back to Lehigh due to a numbers game. The Flyers defense is actually a strength of this club in the early going of the season, and he may get another shot with the big club when an unfortunate injury arises.
The 27-year-old in Belpedio knows exactly where he stands with the club. He is a utility defenseman, and will do anything the coaching staff asks of him in order to win the game, “Obviously, everyone has different paths in their career. Mine led me here. I had a lot of games in the minors, a lot of tough days. I leaned on my family for that, and my work ethic,” said Belpedio after being recalled during his stint with the Flyers. He will be back folks, Belpedio deserves that.

Olle Lycksell

Olle, Olle, Olle…Olle, Olle, Olle. What a season for Olle Lycksell last year. He needed a good Rookie Camp to solidify his status as an up and coming prospect, and Lycksell did just that. Fast forward to a Training Camp, where he impressed John Tortorella. He really made the right impression with the Lehigh Phantoms and he made his NHL Debut last season against the Vancouver Canucks in October.
Lycksell was recalled by the Flyers today, and Noah Cates hits IR (Injured Reserve).
For his efforts, Lycksell signed a two-year, two-way, $1.575 million contract ($787,500 AAV) this past offseason. He has potted 12 goals and has registered seven assists in 21 games played with the Phantoms this season.
Before training camp began, Lycksell knew he was on the bubble, or outside looking in when he was not on the third or fourth line to open the pre-season. Rather, it was Poehling who was Centering Nic Deslauriers and Garnet Hathaway on opening night. To his credit, Lycksell had a stellar rookie camp and rookie games back in September.
Now it’s Lycksell’s turn to shine once again, and prove to John Tortorella and the coaching staff that he is worth an extra look. Kudos to Lycksell for sticking with it, he has earned this recall.
