The Flyers could always use speed within their lineup, and that’s something that Jett Luchanko provides. Not only does he have skill, but his speed would be a factor at the NHL level. He’s an elite skater, and that can make a difference on this 2024-25 team. That’s just yet another reason for him to make the opening night lineup, and proceed to get a nine-game tryout.
It’s becoming more plausible that a nine-game tryout ensues, “He’s handled himself very well through camp,” Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella said. “He’s in elite condition. He’s a strong kid, bigger than I thought he was. He’s a smart player.”
Luchanko has to prove to the Flyers brain trust that he can handle physicality, and still come away with the puck. He should play tonight and the third pre-season game for the orange and black, and that is yet another audition for a nine-game tryout at the very least.
Tortorella really seems to be excited about Luchanko. He speaks very highly of him, but he comes up in a conversation that Jett wasn’t a part of. For instance, yesterday Tortorella was speaking about Matvei Michkov, and at the very end Tortorella said “Both him and Jett do.” Now we will get to the quote later, but this spells good news for Luchanko. It’s always good when the Head Coach mentions you, even when you’re not a part of the question that was asked.
Matvei Michkov
Michkov, by all accounts, has had a great training camp. It was nice to hear Tortorella Sarah’s thoughts on such yesterday, and one can sense the enthusiasm in his voice when he was speaking of him, “I think he’s very attentive. He’s a hockey player, he loves being on the ice. He’s getting a lot better at understanding, much better speaking. Z was there, helping on the ice. He just loves playing, full of energy, full personality,” Tortorella said.

Tortorella continues, “He can protect the puck. I don’t know if people realize, but our people do. He can protect the puck, and he gets into those areas to protect the puck. He’s had a good camp. Both him and Jett have equipped themselves very well.”
Matvei Michkov continues to impress the Flyers brain trust, and if one attended practice it would be easy to see why they think so highly of him. In the same token, Jett wasn’t part of that conversation, and Tortorella brought him up. Again. One can sense the excitement in his voice when talking about Michkov or Luchanko.
Both Luchanko and Michkov are impressing, and no one should be shocked about this. I wrote a few articles on this before training camp began, so this should come as no surprise to our readers.
