It’s finally happened, Ivan Fedotov officially joined the Flyers last season after being drafted by the organization 188th overall in the seventh round of the NHL draft in 2015.

The 27-year-old netminder is a towering 6-foot-7 and weighs 214.5 pounds, per the Flyers’ PR Joe Siville. He saw two games of action last season, and it was anything but blissful. Most gave him the benefit of the doubt after all he has been through to come to North America in the first place. But, with a full offseason to train and get to know the Flyers training and dieticians, some expect more from him, which is understandable.

In Fedotov’s previous two starts this season, he just looked shaky and not confident. Even so much so, Fedotov has had trouble picking up screens, and tracking pucks. He just looked bad, until parts of last night against the Washington Capitals.

Fedotov once again started the game shaky, but the team in front of him did him no justice. Three of the four goals he allowed were not his fault, but the second one was just bad positioning off a point shot, once again. However, with the Flyers down in the dumps with the score 4-0 in the second, Fedotov made this beautiful sprawling save, which then opened the floodgates for the orange and black to get back into the game.

“He made a couple of big saves there to keep us in it,” Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella said following the game. What Fedotov did was at the very least earn one or two more starts, while quieting a goalie controversy for the time being. This at least gets Alexei Kolosov a few more starts with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, as the Phantoms embark a three game weekend this coming weekend.

Every prospect or young player is different, in terms of learning the game. Fedotov needs to really embrace this moment as a success. His numbers do him no justice as he endures a 5.35 GAA, coupled with a .823 Save Percentage. In his defense, these numbers improved from the game prior, baby steps right.

Fedotov is not guaranteed a backup role, especially with a decision looming for Kolosov. At the end of the month, Kolosov could indeed be loaned to the KHL, so Fedotov needs to finish the month of October on a strong note, as does Kolosov for that matter.
