The East Coast wild card race is still all clogged up with the Flyers in a three way tie with Ottawa and Detroit just two points out of the final spot. The Washington Capitals are now just three points behind the pack which makes tonight’s Flyers vs Caps “four point game” even that much more consequential.

New Kid in Town
All signs are pointing towards Porter Martone making his NHL debut in Washington tonight.

Martone was picked by the Flyers number six overall in the 2025 NHL draft. He reported to Michigan State University before Flyers training camp began. So we did not get a sneak peak at the talented forward in Flyers gear until yesterday morning.
This season with the Spartans Martone notched 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points in 35 games played. The 6′-3″ winger, who hails from Peterborough Ontario, turned 19 years of age on October 26th 2025.
Michigan’s season came to a surprise end when they were upset by Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon. Less than 24 hours later Porter signed an NHL contract.
Sunday Night
Flyers GM Danny Briere addressed the press at the Gene Hart media center in the Xfinity Mobile Arena before the Flyers Dallas Stars game on Sunday evening. He told us the Flyers had in fact signed Martone to a three year entry level deal. If all his paperwork and medical “doctor stuff” went through we could see him make his NHL debut as early as Tuesday night vs the Caps in Washington.
He said Martone had put on some body mass since the Fall and that he has had a chance to play against bigger players in the NCAA division 1 level where many of the players are older than he is.

Trevor Zegras scored the game winner in overtime against the Stars. It was a dramatic finish to a cautiously hard fought game between two teams on the second night of a back-to-back. Strategy was key as legs were being pushed to the brink.
The Dallas Stars are the best team in the NHL behind only the Colorado Avalanche. This was quite an accomplishment for the Orange and Black winning the match by the score of 2-1.

Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson put together another fine performance allowing just one Dallas goal. Ersson has been spectacular since the Olympic break after having a rough first half of the season. The combination of a healthy Dan Vladar and a rejuvenated Samuel Ersson has been key to the Flyers fight back into the pack vying for a wild card ticket to playoff hockey.
Monday Morning
As promised, Porter Martone took to the ice at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees NJ first thing Monday morning. He was joined by a handful of Flyers as it was an optional skate on a team day off.
Most notably Tyson Foerster was skating without the yellow “no-contact” jersey he has been sporting since his return to practicing with the team. Foerster was injured on December 1st in a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Flyers have missed Foerster’s fire-power and determination on the ice. He’s an absolute asset to the team and his return will surly be a boost. No word yet on when that may happen. Foerster has been looking solid skating with the team. His snap shot is looking killer, the puck just jumps off his stick. No big telegraph or wind up, all technique, heavy, heavy shot.

Tonight
The Flyers will be in Washington to faceoff against the Capitals. The Capitals have been doing better as of late and are inching their way back towards the pack in the super tight Metropolitan Division. This will be a chance for the Flyers to stall the Cap’s progress while banking two much needed points of their own. And perhaps we’ll see the NHL debut of Porter Martone.
Thursday the Flyers will play “game 2” of the “Detroit Series”. The Flyers play the Red Wings a total of three times this season. All three games are jammed into this pivotal moment in time just before the end of the regular season. The Red Wings are currently tied with the Flyers just two points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets who are sitting in that coveted final wild card slot.
The Flyers won game one against the Wings 5-3 this past Saturday. After this coming Thursday the two teams will meet up again on April 9th.
Watching the Flyers bounce back these past few weeks has been a blast. After January the Flyers post season hopes seemed all but lost. The team has really turned it around and they are giving Flyers Fans something to cheer about. There’s a ton going on, and we didn’t even get to Torts going to Vegas yet.
