The lights shined bright in south Philly early Friday evening as hockey was back in Philly. In the first period the Flyers looked good offensively, and just a little over six minutes into the first period. Joel Farabee shot the puck which deflected off Ryan Ellis and into the net to make the score 1-0 Flyers. Overall, the Flyers had a impressive fourteen shots on goal to Vancouver’s five shots on goal.

In the second period, it was the exact opposite of the first period for the Flyers. Vancouver came out with authority, and scored four goals in the period. The first of which came just two minutes into the period when Vasily Podkolzin shot a wrist shot from the right side by the face off circle to tie it up at one a piece. Moments later, Elias Pettersson wristed another shot on a power play past Carter Hart to make it 2-1 in favor of the Canucks. A few minutes later Vancouver struck again with a goal by Alex Chiasson to make it 3-1 that was also a wrist shot on a power play. Three minutes later the Flyers answered back as Cam Atkinson scored his first as a Flyer (Joel Farabee and Keith Yandle with assists). Unfortunately, the Canucks were not done, towards the end of the second period they scored once again as JT Miller blasted a puck past Hart for the 4-2 lead, as both teams headed for the showers for the intermission.

With just three minutes left in the third period the Flyers were gifted a power play. Travis Konecny’s wrist shot went past Vancouver goalie Thatcher Demko to cut the Vancouver lead to just one. One minute later Claude Giroux’s blasted a shot, and the puck found the back of the net which tied the game up at four.

“It was great. That was one of the best goals I’ve scored. The guys and fans were excited.” – Claude Giroux on the fans if Philadelphia

In overtime both teams could not muster anything past ether goalie, so they went to the elusive shootout. First up for Vancouver was Elias Pettersson who beat Carter Hart to score the first shootout goal. The Flyers blew two opportunities in the shoot out. The game winning goal was scored by J.T Miller to give Vancouver a 5-4 shoot out win.

  1. Why watch this team. Look like last year’s, poor goaltending and PK and can’t play more than a 30 min game. Just a sour organization that just simply can not get out of perpetual mediocrity.
