It was a heck of a battle at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday evening (April 18th) between the Islanders and Flyers. On a positive note, the defensive play and goaltending of the Flyers were outstanding, but Brian Elliott was beaten on a 2-on-one in overtime to give the Islanders a 1-0 victory.
It was a back and fourth battle all the way to the final second of the opening period where the Flyers had some good opportunities to make things happen but they just couldn’t get a goal past Ilya Sorokin to take the lead.
The Flyers handled themselves pretty well the whole second period and brought a ton of pressure to the Islanders. They had a total of fifteen shots on goal and the Islanders only had nine in the second period.
Great Flyers penalty killing was the story in the third, as they killed off two power plays, and Flyers goaltender Brain Elliott made a lot of excellent saves to keep the Flyers battling in a scoreless game. The Islanders dominated the third period, but the Flyers were able to push the 0-0 game to overtime.
The Islanders put a lot of pressure in the overtime and the Islanders finally found the net 2:23 in to the overtime. the Islanders scored off a fantastic cross ice pass by Jordan Eberle to Nick Leddy and Leddy finished it off with a soft tip in that went past Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott to help the Islanders secure the win, 1-0.
“Amazing moment and I will remember that for the rest of my life,” Oskar Lindblom said of the fans ovations. “It was emotional to be honest. To be able to be out there with this team is amazing.”
The Flyers are now 20-18-7 on the season.
NEXT UP: The Flyers will take a trip to New York City to face the 23-16-6 New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, April 22nd at 7:00 PM EST on ESPN+ and NBC Sports Philadelphia.
