A very wise person once said “gratitude is the secret to happiness”. During this current losing streak Flyers Fans may be having trouble finding things to feel grateful about. We all know the Flyers are really in a jam right now and there is no quick fix in sight. The ever-growing injury list is just insane at this point leaving the team frozen in time waiting for bodies to heal. In the meantime a lot of players are getting a chance to step up, some of them are making the most of the opportunity. The coaching change this year has been a huge building block. We are witnessing a transitional period in the team’s history for sure. John Tortorella is faced with the challenge of turning this team around and his situation seems to change on an almost daily basis as his roster of skilled veterans is constantly shrinking. If he can keep this young group competitive through this stretch of time things can only get better as missing players start to return to the line-up. …So back to gratitude and happiness.

On this Thanksgiving I am thankful that my home town even has an NHL team. I am glad our team is the Philadelphia Flyers, through good times and bad. I am grateful for the team, its history, and the community that surrounds it. I am grateful for the sport of hockey and all the great life lessons that come with it. It does my heart good to see the great work that the Ed Snider Youth Hockey foundation does for the young people in this city. It is such a positive force for so many kids not just with hockey but with their education. Such a great option especially in the areas of town that are in such gigantic need of great options. It makes me feel proud when I see the locker rooms in those local rinks painted orange and black. I am grateful for the positive impact that hockey has had on generations of my family and friends. I am grateful for the bad trouble it has kept us out of, and for all the good trouble it has gotten us into. Many of the great life lessons that are hidden inside the great sport of hockey are not learned while things are easily going your way. My dear sister Joyce always said that a hockey player’s heart is not special because they don’t get knocked down, its special because they get back up afterwards. You have to take the hit and keep moving forward. Its hockey season, take your hits and be gratefull. Happy Thanksgiving Flyers Fans! Turkey today Penguin tomorrow.
