The NHL Draft Lottery was held a week ago and it’s now been confirmed that the Philadelphia Flyers will be selecting 5th overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Despite the Flyers entering the lottery with the 4th worst record in the league, the way the odds are structured in terms of the lottery favoured the Flyers picking at 5th overall instead of 4th. As the odds initially predicted this was exactly what did occur.

Even though the Flyers dropped one spot in the draft lottery, selecting at 5th overall still means they can acquire a highly talented player. There’s a handful of prospects that may be available at 5th overall including Joakim Kemell, Matthew Savoie, David Jiraicek, Simon Nemec, Juraj Slafkovsky or possibly Logan Cooley that that could help the organization moving forward.

No matter who the Flyers select they need to ensure with this pick that they are drafting a player they are confident in and has the upside to become a difference maker in the NHL. Along with this, the player drafted needs to fit the direction the team plans to go in moving forward. The organization’s development staff also needs to put a plan in place with whatever player is selected to ensure their strengths as a player are identified. While, also placing the prospect in the position moving forward to grow the strengths and assets of their game and adapt them to the NHL level.

Due to there being a handful of talented players available to select with the 5th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft it’s hard to predict which player the Flyers end up taking. It will certainly be interesting to see if the organization prioritizes their need for a high end center and adding to their center depth or if they decide to draft using the best player available method.
