With the Philadelphia Flyers fate sealed for this season in terms of a playoff berth being out of the realm of possibility. There are still some other aspects of the team’s play to key in on.
The Flyers have some young players on their roster that are exciting to watch and with the Trade Deadline looming and the team’s UFA’s likely being moved more young players should have an opportunity to get a cup of coffee in the NHL to close out this 2021-2022 regular season. That’s certainly something to look forward to as a particular prospect may impress and show some promising signs in their development through such an opportunity.
Not to mention with the team already having younger players on the roster and likely inserting more in the near future, it’s a chance for these prospects and players to begin fostering some important habits in their game. Despite the team’s losing record this season, learning how to win and close out games will be an important factor in their development as potential future NHL players.
With the pressure off for the remainder of the season from a results perspective, now is the perfect time to start adopting those key habits. Understanding how to protect a lead late in the game, how to play with urgency and how to not fold under pressure once one mistake is made and you are protecting a lead are crucial factors at the NHL level.
Most of these habits are tied into puck possession and decision making. In many cases understanding how to effectively execute the above tendencies relating to holding a lead late in games is established with more experience and experience under pressure in a game situation. Having these prospects build this experience at the NHL level and start learning and adapting their games to include said habits should be the top priority for the Philadelphia Flyers coaching staff and development staff throughout the remainder of this season.
To add on, even though the playoffs are far out of reach, keeping an eye on the team’s draft positioning going into next season is something fans can look to as a glimmer of hope relating to the Organization’s future. Another aspect to this will be the upcoming Trade Deadline. This should grab Flyers fans attention as the team currently has several UFA’s who are likely to be moved at the deadline. Also, focusing on the return for these players will be interesting in terms of gauging how these returns could impact the Flyers future positively or negatively.
Even though this season has not lived up to the initial expectations set. There are still things on the horizon that should keep Flyers fans engaged and interested in the next steps the organization plans to take moving forward to return to competitiveness.
