It’s finally happened! The Philadelphia Flyers have actually won a game in 2022. This past Saturday while taking on the LA Kings the Flyers ended their 13 game winless streak and even managed to put together two wins in a row with their latest victory against the Winnipeg Jets. In a season full of disappointment and two ten game losing streaks the team getting a few wins before heading on the All-Star Break is certainly a positive. Especially when looking at the Flyers, who seemed as though they had forgotten how to win a game with the way they’ve been playing as of late. The team’s level of inconsistency throughout this past losing streak was occurring from a period to period basis in relation to their level of play. Not to mention the propensity for giving the puck away, as well as, allowing high danger scoring chances at an alarming rate.

Although the Flyers have not performed up to or even close to the expectations laid out at the beginning of this season, expectations are still allowed to change based on the circumstances. The truth is the Philadelphia Flyers are not a playoff team and the remainder of this season should be treated as an opportunity to evaluate the organization as a whole.

From a hockey perspective, focusing on the talent within the franchise’s prospect pool and figuring out which young prospects are going to have the skill and ability to be contributors at the NHL level should be something the team is actively analyzing. While also understanding where these players are in terms of the development of their skill and if they are ready to play in the NHL, or need to work on details of their game playing in the AHL going into next season.

One takeaway with this season that has not gone according to plan is that the organization’s younger players are getting chances to showcase their play at the NHL level. Before this season began not very many believed that would ever be a possibility. What the Flyers should be identifying going forward is which prospects within their prospect pool are going to be able to help the team moving forward in regards to building an identity, culture and effective style of play.

On this week’s episode of the Gettin Gritty Wit It podcast, Yariv and I delve into the Flyers expectations for the remainder of the season and how evaluating the Flyers prospects and their skill sets will be crucial to determining the direction of the organization. We also discuss the possibility of a Rasmus Ristolainen trade, a Claude Giroux trade and a ton of other potential moves regarding the trade deadline, next season and beyond.
