The Philadelphia Flyers started up their second set of back-to-back games of the season on Friday night, where they traveled to St. Louis to take on the Blues. Sam Ersson got the start in net, and there were no changes to the lineup. The Tippett-Dvorak-Zegras line fueled the Flyers to victory in a shootout in this back-and-forth battle. Ersson had a very rough net in goal as he allowed five goals on 17 shots. The orange and black improved to 9-5-3 on the season.

Jordan Kyrou gave the Blues a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the game. Trevor Zegras turned the puck over in the neutral zone, and Kyrou took advantage. He took the puck into the Flyers’ zone and put a wrist shot under the blocker of Ersson. The goal was unassisted.

The Flyers tied the game up at one at the 8:18 mark of the first period courtesy of Zegras. Christian Dvorak made a dropback pass, and Zegras put a wrist shot through the legs of Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington. Dvorak and Travis Sanheim tallied assists.

The Blues took a 2-1 lead at the 9:42 mark of the first thanks to Jimmy Snuggerud. A turnover by Travis Konecny allowed this goal to happen. Robert Thomas tipped Konecny’s pass and took the puck into the offensive zone. Thomas fed Snuggerud with a pass to the slot, and Snuggerud put a wrist shot past the glove of Ersson. Thomas collected the only assist.

Dvorak was called for high-sticking just 48 seconds into the second period, which gave the Blues the game’s first power play. Ersson had to make a few big saves, and the Flyers did their job of clearing the puck when given the chance.

Justin Faulk gave the Blues a 3-1 lead at the 6:54 mark of the second. He took a pass from Cam Fowler and put a one-timer past the blocker of Ersson. Fowler and Oskar Sundqvist received assists.

The Flyers responded quickly as they got back within one at the 7:17 mark of the second period. Binnington made the initial save on Owen Tippett but allowed a rebound. Dvorak got to the rebound and put a backhander into the open net. Tippett and Emil Andrae were awarded assists.

Colton Parayko got called for tripping at the 14:48 mark of the second, which gave the Flyers their first power play. They didn’t capitalize on this opportunity, but Binnington had to make some huge saves on Matvei Michkov and Tyson Foerster.

Zegras tied the game up at three for the Flyers at the 18:24 mark of the second period. He tipped in Andrae’s shot from the blue line under the left arm of Binnington. This was Zegras’ second goal of the game. Assists went to Andrae and Tippett.

The Blues took a 4-3 lead just 40 seconds into the third period. Kyrou fed Dylan Holloway with a pass to the right circle, and Holloway put a wrist shot past the glove of Ersson. Kyrou and Fowler tallied assists.

Thomas made it 5-3 Blues at the 4:56 mark of the third. Snuggerud, from below the goal line, fed Thomas with a pass to the slot, and Thomas put a snapshot past Ersson. Snuggerud received the only assist.

Dvorak got the Flyers back within one at the 7:53 mark of the third period. Tippett stole the puck from Matthew Kessel and fed Dvorak with a pass to the slot. Dvorak then put a wrist shot past the glove of Binnington. This was his second goal of the game. Tippett was given the only assist. This made the score 5-4 Blues.

The Flyers tied the game up at five at the 10:29 mark of the third courtesy of Tippett. Zegras found him in the slot, and Tippett put a snapshot over the blocker of Binnington. Zegras and Noah Juulsen collected assists.

No team scored another goal in regulation, so the game went to overtime. Both teams had big scoring chances, but the goaltenders had all the answers. Pavel Buchnevich was called for tripping, which gave Zegras a penalty shot. The overtime continued as Binnington made the save on the attempt.

No goal was scored in overtime, so the game went to a shoot-out. The Blues sent out Thomas, Snuggerud, and Holloway, and the Flyers sent Zegras and Michkov. Zegras was the only player to score, which gave the Flyers a six-five victory.

Flyers went zero for one on the power play but killed off the only Blues’ man advantage.
