The Philadelphia Flyers stayed in Florida for a matchup against the Panthers on Wednesday night in their second game of a four-game road trip. Dan Vladar got the start in net. Noah Juulsen and Nikita Grebenkin were inserted into the lineup, with Nicolas Deslauriers and Egor Zamula being healthy scratches. They took down the Panthers in comeback fashion after recovering from a two-goal deficit. Both Tyson Foerster and Sean Couturier scored with less than a minute left to seal the deal. The orange and black improved to 12-7-3 on the season.
Brad Marchand gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the 5:21 mark of the first period. Sam Bennett’s pass made its way underneath Nick Seeler and to the stick of Marchand. Marchand then put a wrist shot past the glove of Vladar. Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe tallied assists.
The Panthers got the game’s first power play at the 7:43 mark of the first as Noah Cates was called for high-sticking. Vladar had to make three big saves to keep the deficit at one, and the Flyers did their job of clearing the puck down the ice.
Anton Lundell got called for high-sticking at the 15:25 mark of the first period, which gave the Flyers their first power play. An aggressive Panthers penalty kill gave the Flyers all kinds of trouble. They couldn’t get set up in the offensive zone and didn’t get a single shot on net.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead at the 5:16 mark of the second period courtesy of Verhaeghe. Bennett fed him with a pass to the right circle, and Verhaeghe put a wrist shot into a wide-open net as Vladar was out of position. Bennett and Aaron Ekblad picked up assists.
Emil Andrae got the Flyers on the board at the 7:57 mark of the second. His wrist shot from the blue line went past the glove of Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky was heavily screened in front. This made the score 2-1, Panthers. Jamie Drysdale and Owen Tippett were given assists.
The Panthers went on their second power play at the 8:12 mark of the second period as Andrae was called for high-sticking. The Flyers had a few chances while shorthanded, and the Panthers didn’t record any shots on net.
Matvei Michkov tied the game up at two for the Flyers at the 11:13 mark of the second. He tipped in Andrae’s shot from the blue line past the blocker of Bobrovsky. Assists went to Andrae and Drysdale.
Bobby Brink got called for hooking at the 12:40 mark of the third period, which gave the Panthers their third power play. The Flyers, again, did a nice job of clearing the puck down the ice. Marchand missed a shot just high from the side of the net, and Vladar had to make a big save on Seth Jones.
Foerster gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead with only 44 seconds remaining in the third. He ripped a wrist shot past the glove of Bobrovsky from the slot. Travis Sanheim and Cam York received assists.
The Flyers put the game away for good with 21 seconds to go, thanks to Couturier. He tipped in Christian Dvorak’s shot from the blue line over the glove of Bobrovsky. Dvorak was given the only assist.
Flyers went zero for one on the power play but killed all three of the Panthers’ man advantages.
Vladar saved 25 of 27 shots, giving him a .926 save percentage.
