The Philadelphia Flyers took their three-game win streak to Washington, D.C., to take on the Capitals Tuesday night in what would be a huge game for both clubs points-wise. Dan Vladar got the start in net. Alex Bump became a healthy scratch with Porter Martone joining the team and making his NHL debut. The Flyers fell down two-zero early, but their resiliency kept them in the game. Unfortunately, Vladar had a tough night in net, and the Flyers lost out on two valuable points. The orange and black fell to 37-25-12 on the season.
The Capitals got the game’s first power play at the 3:29 mark of the first period as Porter Martone was called for delay of game (puck over glass). The Flyers did a nice job of intercepting passes and clearing the puck down the ice. Noah Cates had a chance while shorthanded, but the puck rolled off his stick at the last second.
The Flyers received their first power play at the 11:07 mark of the first as Cole Hutson got called for tripping. Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson made saves on Cates, Matvei Michkov, and Owen Tippett. Rasmus Sandin came up with a huge shot block on Travis Konecny. The Flyers moved the puck around well, but couldn’t get a puck in the net.
Tom Wilson gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at the 14:59 mark of the first period. He took a dropback pass from Pierre-Luc Dubois and put a snapshot under the blocker of Vladar from the slot. Dubois and Sandin tallied assists.
Alex Ovechkin made it 2-0 Capitals at the 18:35 mark of the first. He took a pass from Matt Roy and put a snapshot into a wide-open net as Vladar was down and out of position. Roy and Connor McMichael picked up assists.
The game went to four-on-four at the 19:47 mark of the first period as Trevor Zegras and McMichael were called for slashing. Travis Sanheim took advantage and got the Flyers on the board 39 seconds into the second period. He took a pass from Konecny, who was at the left circle, and put a snapshot under the glove of Thompson from the slot. 2-1 Capitals. Konecny and Christian Dvorak were given assists.
The Flyers tied the game up at two at the 4:36 mark of the second, courtesy of Carl Grundstrom. He took a nice backwards pass from Zegras and put a wrist shot just past the right skate of Thompson. Zegras received the lone assist.
Konecny was called for tripping at the 5:29 mark of the second period, which gave the Capitals their second man advantage. They’d capitalize thanks to Jakob Chychrun. Ryan Leonard made a pass to the blue line, and Chychrun put a slapshot under the glove of Vladar. Assists went to Leonard and Dubois. 3-2 Capitals.
Cole Hutson got called for hooking at the 9:51 mark of the second. This gave the Flyers their second power play. They didn’t get any shots on net and really couldn’t get anything going. Vladar made an easy save on Anthony Beauvillier while shorthanded, and the Flyers gave the puck away a few times.
The Capitals went on their third power play at the 15:59 mark of the second period as Zegras was called for tripping. Leonard capitalized to make it 4-2 Capitals. He took a nice pass from Dubois and put a snapshot past the glove of Vladar from the right circle. Dubois and Chychrun tallied assists.
The Flyers got back within one just 33 seconds into the third period. Konecny, from behind the Capitals net, found Dvorak in front, and he put a snapshot into a wide-open net. 4-3 Capitals. Konecny and Sanheim picked up assists.
Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game at the 3:47 mark of the third to put the Capitals back up by two. He took a backhanded pass from McMichael in front of the Flyers net and put a snapshot over the glove of Vladar. McMichael and Chychrun were given assists. 5-3 Capitals.
The Flyers stayed resilient and got back within one at the 7:52 mark of the third period courtesy of Denver Barkey. He deflected Rasmus Ristolainen’s shot from the high slot past Thompson. 5-4 Capitals. Assists went to Ristolainen and Cates.
The game went to four-on-four for the second time as Justin Sourdif and Emil Andrae were called for roughing at the 9:38 mark of the third. Nothing worth noting happened here. No shots on goal were recorded, and a few shots were blocked.
Dylan Strome got called for tripping at the 16:13 mark of the third period, which gave the Flyers their third power play. They pulled Vladar towards the very end to get the extra attacker, but it didn’t pay off. Thompson ended up making saves on Michkov and Tippett from in tight, and the Capitals were able to clear the puck down a few times.
The Flyers pulled Vladar again with 40 seconds remaining in the third in favor of the extra attacker, with the Flyers down by one. It backfired, however, as Wilson scored his second goal of the game at the 18:56 mark. He took a short pass from Dubois and put a snapshot into the empty net from his own end. Dubois and Roy tallied assists.
Flyers went zero for three on the power play and only killed off one of the three Capitals’ man-advantages.
Vladar saved 12 of 17 shots, giving him a .706 save percentage.
