The Philadelphia Flyers continued their homestand with a matchup against the Winnipeg Jets last Thursday the 16th. Cam York would make his season debut with Emil Andrae being sent down to Lehigh Valley. Samuel Ersson would make his second start of the season. This game is the definition of a doozy. The Flyers struggled most of the night with the active sticks of the Jets players. Owen Tippett and Matvei Michkov scored the only goals. The orange and black dropped to 1-2-1 on the season.

Vladislav Namestnikov gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at the 5:45 mark of the first period. Ersson made the initial save on Nino Niederreiter but allowed a huge rebound. Namestnikov got to the rebound and put a wrist shot into a wide-open net. Niederreiter and Gustav Nyquist were awarded assists.

The Flyers got the games first powerplay at the 3:28 mark of the second period as Dylan DeMelo was called for holding. Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck had to make a huge save on Travis Konecny, the puck was snapped around quickly, and one puck rang off the crossbar.

The Jets took a 2-0 lead at the 7:01 mark of the second courtesy of Mark Scheifele. Nikita Grebenkin wasn’t able to handle a pass, and the Jets took advantage. Gabriel Vilardi fed him with a pass to the slot and Scheifele put a wrist shot past the glove of Ersson. Vilardi was given the only assist.

Jonathan Toews got called for holding at the 12:38 mark of the second period which gave the Flyers their second powerplay. They’d fail to capitalize again, but Hellebuyck had to make a few big saves on Konecny and Tyson Foerster.

Tippett got the Flyers on the board at the 16:22 mark of the second. He went on a two-on-one with Christian Dvorak and rang a snapshot off the crossbar and in past Hellebuyck. Trevor Zegras and Travis Sanheim tallied assists. This made the score 2-1 Jets.

The Jets would take their two-goal lead back at the 17:43 mark of the second period. Morgan Barron’s wrist shot from the point would go off the backside of Noah Cates and past Ersson. Kyle Connor received the lonely assist.

Zegras was called for interference at the 9:16 mark of the third period which gave the Jets their first Power Play play of the game. Connor passed him the puck across the ice and Scheifele put a slapshot past the blocker of Ersson. Connor and Alex Iafallo picked up assists.

The Flyers got their third powerplay at the 10:38 mark of the third period as Toews interfered with Nick Seeler. They couldn’t get set up in the zone at all and didn’t record a single shot on net. They’d fall to 0-3 on the night.

Michkov got the Flyers within two with his first of the season at the 17:39 mark of the third. Noah Juulsen fed him with a pass to the left circle and Michkov put a snapshot past Hellebuyck’s glove. Juulsen and Sean Couturier were awarded assists.

The Flyers would pull Ersson to try to pull within one, but it backfired. Tanner Pearson put the game away with an empty-net goal at the 18:47 mark of the third period. No assists were given. This gave the Jets a 5-2 lead.

The Flyers went 0 for 3 on the power play and couldn’t kill off the only Jets man advantage.
