The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second game of a back-to-back and the start of a three-game road trip. After a hard-fought battle, they’d come up short in the shoot-out and lose 3-2. Ivan Fedotov got his first start in a week and put on quite a show in regulation. The Flyers fall to 19-20-6 on the season.

Bobby Brink gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at the 3:44 mark of the first period. Nick Seeler passed the puck down low to Brink who was all alone in front and tipped the puck past Blue Jackets goaltender Daniil Tarasov. Seeler and Jamie Drysdale collected assists.

Zach Werenski tied the game up at one for the Blue Jackets at the 10:27 mark of the first period. Rasmus Ristolainen tried to pass the puck to Noah Cates in the offensive zone but turned it over which sent Werenski on the breakaway. He sent a wrist shot past the blocker of Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov. No assists were given.

The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 1:50 mark of the second period as Dante Fabbro was called for cross-checking. They only managed to get one shot on net and the Blue Jackets did a nice job clearing the puck.

The Blue Jackets got their first power play at the 11:39 mark of the second period as Travis Konecny was called for roughing and interference and Mathieu Olivier for roughing. Travis Sanheim took a big hit from Olivier and Konecny came in to defend him. The Flyers did a nice job on the penalty kill as they cleared the puck when given the opportunity and only allowed the Blue Jackets to get one shot on net.

Owen Tippett gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead at the 8:13 mark of the third period. His wrist shot from the blue line went under Tarasov’s left pad. Frost received the lonely assist.

Zach Aston-Reese was called for high-sticking at the 12:10 mark of the third period, which gave the Flyers their second power play. Matvei Michkov had a great chance in tight but other than that, they couldn’t get anything going.

Werenski tied the game up at two at the 15:23 mark of the third period. He stripped Scott Laughton of the puck and went on a two-on-one with Kiril Marchenko. Marchenko made a nice cross-ice past to him and his snapshot went past the glove of Fedotov. Marchenko and Adam Fantilli were given assists.

The game would then go to overtime. Both teams had great chances on odd-man rushes but no one capitalized. It then went to a shoot-out.

The Flyers sent out Konecny and Michkov and both missed but not by much. The Blue Jackets, however, sent out Kent Johnson and Marchenko. They both slid the puck through the legs of Fedotov.

The Flyers went 0 for 2 on the power play but killed off the Blue Jackets’ lonely-man advantage.

Fedotov put on a solid performance and had to make huge saves to keep the Flyers in the game. He saved 27 of 29 shots, giving him a .931 save percentage.
