It’s a new calendar month and the Philadelphia Flyers kicked it off with a matchup against the Colorado Avalanche. Emil Andrae and Jacob Gaucher (NHL debut) were called up from Lehigh Valley and were in the lineup. Erik Johnson jumped back into the lineup on defense as well. For the first time in franchise history, the Flyers have been shutout in three consecutive games as they’d lose 2-0. The team is in a massive struggle and fall two games below .500 at 23-25-6 on the season.

Samuel Girard gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead at the 8:33 mark of the second period. Scott Laughton missed on a scoring chance in the Avalanche zone which sent Girard on the rush the other way. He passed to Casey Mittelstadt then back to Girard who put a snap shot past the blocker of Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson. Mittelstadt and Jonathan Drouin collected assists.

The Avalanche got the games first power play at the 15:49 mark of the second period as Laughton was called for hooking. They capitalized on this opportunity courtesy of Nathan MacKinnon. Cale Makar set him up with a nice pass to the right circle and MacKinnon put a wrist shot over the glove of Ersson top left corner. This gave the Avalanche a 2-0 lead at the 17:28 mark. Makar and Drouin tallied assists.

Noah Cates was called for tripping at the 19:41 mark of the second period which gave the Avalanche their second power play. Ersson had to make a big save on Martin Necas but the Flyers did a nice job blocking shots and clearing the puck when given the opportunity.

The Flyers got their first power play at the 14:39 mark of the third period as Miles Wood got called for slashing. They pulled Ersson in favor of the extra attacker and it didn’t pay off. They got a few shots on net but the Avalanche pressured on the penalty kill and cleared the puck when given the chance.

The Flyers went 0 for 1 on the power play and killed off one of two Avalanche man advantages.

Ersson put on a decent performance as he saved 30 of 32 shots, giving him a .938 save percentage.
