The Philadelphia Flyers started up their 13th set of back-to-back games Thursday night with a huge matchup against the Detroit Red Wings at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. Sam Ersson got the start in net. Tyson Foerster returned from injury and joined the lineup. Garnet Hathaway became a healthy scratch. The Flyers playoff hopes took a huge hit with a four-to-two loss. Foerster scored in his return, and Martone recorded his first point, but a few misplays and breakdowns cost them two points. The orange and black fell to 37-26-12 on the season.

The Red Wings got the game’s first power play at the 6:23 mark of the first period as Martone was called for cross-checking. The Flyers were able to clear the puck down a few times, and Ersson made a few big saves on Dylan Larkin from in front.

Sean Couturier got called for tripping at the 18:32 mark of the first, which gave the Red Wings their second power play. They capitalized on this one courtesy of Alex DeBrincat. He took a pass from Patrick Kane and put a snapshot over the glove of Ersson from the slot. Kane and Moritz Seider tallied assists.

Tyson Foerster tied the game up at one just 31 seconds into the second period. After Owen Tippett fanned on a shot, the puck made its way to Foerster, who then put a snapshot past the blocker of Red Wings goaltender John Gibson from the slot. Tippett and Trevor Zegras picked up assists.

The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead at the 18:29 mark of the second thanks to Lucas Raymond. J.T. Compher was able to get the puck to Raymond off his skate, and Raymond put a snapshot into a wide-open net from the side. Compher and Simon Edvinsson were given assists.

The Flyers went on their first power play at the 1:48 mark of the third period as Raymond was called for hooking. Gibson ended up making a handful of saves, and the Red Wings did their job of clearing the puck down to waste time. Martone had a decent chance as he took a shot and then went net front.

Kane made it 3-1 Red Wings at the 9:37 mark of the third. He took a pass from Andrew Copp and put a wrist shot under the blocker of Ersson from the left circle. Copp received the lone assist.

Travis Konecny got the Flyers within one at the 10:29 mark of the third period. He deflected Martone’s shot from just above the left circle past the glove of Gibson. 3-2 Red Wings. Assists went to Martone and Christian Dvorak.

15 seconds later, DeBrincat got the two-goal lead back for Detroit. Travis Sanheim wasn’t able to corral a rolling puck. Copp then missed a shot wide, DeBrincat got to it, and he put a turnaround wrist shot past Ersson from the angle. Copp and Kane tallied assists.

Ersson was pulled with 2:20 remaining in the third in favor of the extra attacker with the Flyers down by two. However, they couldn’t get any more pucks past Gibson. The Red Wings held on for the four-to-two victory.

Flyers went zero for one on the power play and killed off only one of two Red Wing man-advantages.

Ersson saved 15 of 19 shots, giving him a .789 save percentage.
