The Philadelphia Flyers traveled home to the Xfinity Mobile Arena to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday night in what was a huge game for both clubs. Dan Vladar got the start in net. Luke Glendening was inserted into the lineup as Garnet Hathaway became a healthy scratch. Both teams scored a goal in the first period, but none after that. The game ultimately ended with Kirill Marchenko winning it for the Blue Jackets in a shootout. The orange and black fell to 31-23-12 on the season.
Marchenko gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead at the 4:21 mark of the first period. After a few saves by Vladar on Adam Fantilli and Mason Marchment and a shot block by Travis Konecny, Marchenko put a wrist shot into a wide-open net as Vladar was down. Fantilli and Damon Severson tallied assists.
Alex Bump tied the game up at one for the Flyers at the 10:24 mark of the first. He deflected Emil Andrae’s shot from the blue line past the blocker of Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves. Andrae and Christian Dvorak picked up assists.
The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 14:13 mark of the first period as Marchenko was called for boarding. Greaves only had to make one glove save on Bump, and the Blue Jackets were able to clear the puck down multiple times. The Flyers also had a very difficult time setting up in the zone.
Fantilli and Carl Grundstrom dropped the gloves at the 12:18 mark of the second period. This occurred after Grundstrom made a big hit on Severson. Grundstrom was given two minutes for boarding and five minutes for fighting. Fantilli was given two minutes for roughing and five minutes for fighting. The game stayed five-on-five.
Cole Sillinger got called for cross-checking at the 17:38 mark of the second, which gave the Flyers their second power play. Greaves made a save on Trevor Zegras, and that’s it. The Blue Jackets were aggressive on the penalty kill, so they didn’t give the Flyers much to work with and cleared the puck down multiple times again.
With two seconds remaining on the second power play, Severson received a double-minor for cross-checking. The Flyers went on a five-on-three for two seconds and then had four minutes of a five-on-four. They had some good quality chances on the double-minor, but Greaves had all the answers.
The Blue Jackets got their first power play at the 7:29 mark of the third period as Rasmus Ristolainen was called for tripping. Vladar made a big save on Ivan Provorov, and the Flyers did a great job of winning faceoffs and clearing the puck. A few active sticks helped get the puck out of the zone and to center ice as well.
No one else scored in regulation, so the game went to overtime. Both teams had their chances in their respective offensive zones, but it was mostly players just skating to center to reset and get a play going.
The game then went to a shootout. The Flyers sent out Matvei Michkov, Zegras, and Konecny. The Blue Jackets sent out Kent Johnson, Fantilli, and Marchenko. Marchenko was the only one to score, securing the two-one victory for Columbus.
Flyers went zero for four on the power play and killed off the only Blue Jackets man advantage.
Vladar saved 27 of 28 shots, giving him a .964 save percentage.
