The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh in their second game of the season Saturday night. Nikita Grebenkin, Jett Luchanko, and Samuel Ersson all made their season debuts with Rodrigo Abols and Nic Deslauriers coming out of the lineup. The two teams went back-and-forth all night, which led to the game needing overtime. Bobby Brink had the game winner but was called back due to goaltender interference. The Flyers would ultimately drop to 0-1-1 on the season.

The Hurricanes got the games first powerplay at the 8:09 mark of the first period as Travis Konecny got called for interference. Discipline continues to be an issue for the Flyers. The Flyers did a nice job clearing the puck and Ersson had to make a few big saves early on. Tyson Foerster also had a great scoring chance while shorthanded but just missed the net wide.

Egor Zamula gave the Hurricanes their second powerplay of the first at the 11:08 mark as he was called for tripping. Ersson, again, stood his ground in net as the Hurricanes had a few good chances in the zone.

Jackson Blake was slashed by Noah Cates at the 16:14 mark of the first which gave the Hurricanes their third powerplay of the game. The Flyers did a great job of getting into shooting lanes and blocking shots on this penalty kill. Garnet Hathaway and Blake would get called for roughing, but it stayed a five-on-four advantage for Carolina.

The Flyers got their first powerplay of the game at the 19:29 mark of the first as Jalen Chatfield got called for tripping. They’d capitalize on this opportunity as Konecny’s shot took a lucky bounce off the boards behind the Hurricanes net and straight to Owen Tippett. Tippett then put a wrist shot past the glove of Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen. Konecny and Trevor Zegras received assists. This would be Zegras’ first point as a Flyer.

Logan Stankoven tied the game up at one at the 3:46 mark of the second period. Ersson made the initial pad save on Blake but allowed a huge rebound. Stankoven got to that rebound and put a snapshot into a wide-open net. Blake and Alexander Nikishin were awarded assists.

The Flyers took a 2-1 lead at the 6:18 mark of the second thanks to Bobby Brink. He received a pass from Noah Cates and ripped a wrist shot past the glove of Andersen. Cates and Grebenkin tallied assists. This would be Grebenkin’s first NHL career point.

Taylor Hall tied the game up at two at the 9:07 mark of the second period. Eric Robinson slid the puck past the stick of Nick Seeler and straight to Hall who backhanded the puck past Ersson’s glove. Robinson was given the only assist.

The Flyers received their second powerplay of the game at the 13:25 mark of the second as K’Andre Miller was called for interference. They had trouble setting up in the zone for a majority of it but had a few good chances in tight at the end. Andersen had to stand his ground.

Jordan Staal gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead at the 18:30 mark of the second period. Jordan Martinook made a pass from the side of the net and Staal put a snapshot past Ersson. Martinook received the lonely assist.

Matvei Michkov was called for roughing at the 2:11 mark of the third which gave the Hurricanes their fourth powerplay of the game. They had multiple scoring chances early on, but Ersson came up with all the answers.

Chatfield committed his second tripping penalty of the game at the 11:42 mark of the third period which gave the Flyers their third powerplay. The Flyers had one good scoring chance in tight and that’s it. The Hurricanes had quite a few chances while shorthanded.

Travis Sanheim tied the game up at three at the 16:00 mark of the third. Brink fed him with a pass to the slot and Sanheim ripped a one-timer past the glove of Andersen. Brink and Foerster were awarded assists.

The game then went into overtime.

Brink scored what would have been the game-winning goal at the 4:06 mark of the overtime period, but it was called back due to goaltender interference. Sanheim bumped into Andersen which disallowed him to play his position.

Seth Jarvis won the game for the Hurricanes at the 4:43 mark of overtime. Sebastian Aho fed him with a pass to the right circle and Jarvis put a slap shot over the right shoulder of Ersson. Aho and Shayne Gostisbehere were given assists.

Flyers went one for three on the power play and killed off all four of the Hurricanes man advantages.

Ersson saved 35 of 39 shots, giving him a .897 save percentage.
