The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Detroit Red Wings in their last non-division game for January. Scott Laughton was out due to family matters, which gave Rodrigo Abols a chance in the big leagues. He’d make his NHL debut tonight. The Flyers pulled out a 2-1 win in overtime to keep their point streak alive and send it to six straight games. They’re now 22-20-6 on the season.
Joel Farabee gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at the 5:21 mark of the second period. Matvei Michkov won a puck battle at the blue line to Sean Couturier. Couturier then passed the puck backward to Farabee who put a backhanded shot past Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon. Couturier and Michkov collected assists.
The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 14:05 mark of the second period as Dylan Larkin got called for slashing. They had trouble setting up in the zone for the majority of the two minutes and didn’t record any shots on net.
Ben Chiarot tied the game up at one just 30 seconds into the third period. Cam York turned the puck over along the board to Lucas Raymond. Raymond then passed the puck to Chiarot who put a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson. Raymond picked up the only assist.
The game would go to overtime as no team could score another goal to take the lead or win. Both teams had chances on odd-man rushes, but the Flyers ultimately pulled out a victory. Lyon went for a poke-check on Owen Tippett and missed, Moritz Seider played the puck to the goal line, and Rasmus Ristolainen poked it in the net. Tippett and Farabee tallied assists.
The Flyers went 0 for 1 on the power play and didn’t face any Red Wings man-advantages.
Ersson had to make some huge saves toward the end of regulation and in overtime to keep the Flyers in it. He saved 27 of 28 shots, giving him a .964 save percentage.
