The Philadelphia Flyers finished up their seven-game homestand with a matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. Samuel Ersson got the start in net. Rasmus Ristolainen and Garnet Hathaway remained out of the lineup with injuries. The rest of the lineup stayed the same. They’d get shut out 5-0 and end the homestand horribly. Ersson had a tough night in net, and the Hurricanes completely dismantled the Flyers. They fall to 28-32-8 on the season.

Sebastian Aho gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at the 8:21 lead of the first period. Travis Konecny turned the puck over after a whack of the stick by Jackson Blake. The puck made its way to Aho, who put a snapshot under the right arm of Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson. Blake and Seth Jarvis collected assists.

The Flyers challenged for goaltender interference on the Aho goal and were wrong. They were assessed a delay of game penalty. Matvei Michkov served it. This gave the Hurricanes the game’s first power play. The Flyers did a nice job of stealing the puck in traffic, and Ersson had to make a big save on Jack Roslovic.

Michkov was called for unsportsmanlike conduct at the 11:40 mark of the first period, which gave the Hurricanes their second power play. They again did a great job stealing and clearing the puck when given the opportunity. The Flyers also had a great scoring chance while shorthanded as Konecny and Ryan Poehling went on a two-on-one.

The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead at the 15:46 mark of the first period courtesy of Mark Jankowski. Ersson swept Eric Robinson’s pass out of the crease but straight to Jankowski. He then put a snapshot past Ersson back post. Egor Zamula lost track of the puck, which allowed Jankowski to receive it. Robinson and Tyson Jost tallied assists.

Poehling took a tripping penalty just 19 seconds into the second period, which gave the Hurricanes their third power play. Nine seconds into it, Taylor Hall made it 3-0. Shayne Gostisbehere and Aho’s shots were saved by Ersson, but he allowed a rebound on Aho’s. Hall then collected that rebound and put a snap shot past Ersson. Aho and Gostisbehere picked up assists.

Jankowski scored his second of the game at the 13:15 mark of the second period to give the Hurricanes a 4-0 lead. Robinson made a nice pass to him off the wall, and Jankowski took it while in stride. He then put a snapshot short side on Ersson. Robinson and Gostisbehere were given assists.

The Flyers got their first power play at the 16:51 mark of the second period as Jankowski was called for roughing. They didn’t record any shots on net but had a few good chances in front of the net.

Noah Cates was called for tripping at the 9:55 mark of the third period, which gave the Hurricanes their fourth power play. The Flyers did a nice job of blocking shots and getting into shooting lanes. Travis Sanheim had a chance while shorthanded, but he lost control of the puck last second.

Blake was called for tripping at the 14:01 mark of the third period, which gave the Flyers their second power play. They spent the majority of the time in the offensive zone but passed way too much. The Flyers managed to get a few shots on net.

Scott Morrow made the score 5-0 Hurricanes at the 19:28 mark of the third period. Ersson made a pad save on Logan Stankoven but allowed a rebound. Morrow collected the rebound and put a backhander over the blocker of Ersson. Stankoven and Hall collected assists.

The Flyers went zero for two on the power play and killed off three of four Hurricane man advantages.

Ersson had a very tough outing in net tonight. He saved 26 of 31 shots, giving him a .839 save percentage.

  1. All I have to say is Grebenkin, Ryabkin (1st round) Kuzmenko, and Shabanov 67pts/64gms : KHL Then add Barkey & Bonk. Now you have one heck of an exciting team for 25-26’.
