The Philadelphia Flyers returned to home ice Saturday for a matinee against the Ottawa Senators. Sam Ersson returned from his injury and got the start in net. Carl Grundstrom made his Flyers debut with Nicolas Deslauriers coming out. Former Flyers captain Claude Giroux returned to Philly. They started out slow but picked things up in the second and third. Matvei Michkov and Jamie Drysdale came up with huge goals, but the Flyers would ultimately lose in overtime. The orange and black fell to 8-5-2 on the season.
Tim Stutzle gave the Senators a 1-0 lead at the 5:14 mark of the first period. David Perron fed him with a pass to the left circle, and Stutzle put a slapshot off Ersson’s mask and into the net. Perron and Ridly Greig were given assists.
The Senators took a 2-0 lead at the 6:19 mark of the first courtesy of Michael Amadio. Giroux made a pass to Amadio, who was in the slot, and Amadio put a backhander over the glove of Ersson. Giroux and Shane Pinto picked up assists.
The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 12:07 mark of the first period as Artem Zub was called for slashing. Bobby Brink had a great chance in the slot, but he fanned on a shot. The Senators also did a nice job of clearing the puck when given the chance.
Emil Andrae got called for interference at the 14:42 mark of the first, which gave the Senators their first power play. Ersson had to make a big save on Perron, and the Flyers did their job of clearing the puck down the ice.
The Flyers got their second power play at the 6:41 mark of the second period as Nick Cousins was called for slashing. They didn’t capitalize yet again, but had a few good looks in the zone. Zegras had a chance from the slot but couldn’t get a good shot off.
The game went to four-on-four at the 9:03 mark of the second as Greig got called for interference and Travis Konecny for roughing. The Senators got off a few shots, but Ersson had all the answers.
Matvei Michkov got the Flyers on the board at the 11:23 mark of the second period. He won a puck battle against the wall and then put a snapshot over the glove of Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark from the low slot. Christian Dvorak and Konecny tallied assists. This made the score 2-1 Senators.
The game again went to four-on-four at the 14:14 mark of the second as Dylan Cozens was called for boarding and Noah Juulsen for roughing. Noah Cates put a shot on net that was seen all the way by Ullmark, and the Senators had a shot that was blocked. Nothing much of note here.
Michkov was called for tripping at the 2:07 mark of the third period, which gave the Senators their second power play. The Flyers did a nice job of getting into shooting lanes to block shots and clearing the puck when given the opportunity.
Drysdale tied the game up at two for the Flyers at the 9:55 mark of the third. Trevor Zegras’ shot went off the skate of Dvorak and straight to Drysdale. Drysdale then put a snapshot into a wide-open net. Ullmark was down on the ice and tried to save the puck with a cartwheel. Dvorak and Zegras were given assists.
No one else scored in regulation, so the game went to overtime.
Stutzle won the game for the Senators at the 3:19 mark of the overtime period. Zegras was late covering his man, which allowed Drake Batherson to slide a pass to him. Stutzle then put a snapshot into a wide-open net. Assists were given to Batherson and Thomas Chabot. The Senators would win three-two.
Flyers went 0 for 2 on the power play but killed off both of the Senators’ man advantages.
Ersson saved 10 of 13 shots, giving him a .769 save percentage.
