The Philadelphia Flyers took home ice in their fifth game of the season back on Oct. 18 where they faced a talented Minnesota Wild team. Dan Vladar made his third start in net and shined brightly in this one. The Flyers came from behind and won in a tense overtime for their second victory. They’d improve to 2-2-1 on the season.
Things got physical early as Nicolas Deslauriers and Marcus Foligno dropped the gloves just 1:56 into the game. Both landed some big punches in the spirited fight and would get five minutes each for fighting.
The Flyers got the games first powerplay at the 18:07 mark of the first period as Jonas Brodin was called for holding. They only managed to get one shot on net, and the Wild did a nice job blocking a few shots. A few shots by the Flyers missed just wide, however.
Vladimir Tarasenko gave the Wild a 1-0 lead at the 1:55 mark of the second period. Marco Rossi fed him with a pass to the top of the right circle and Tarasenko put a snapshot over the glove of Vladar. Rossi and Brodin were awarded assists.
The Flyers challenged the goal for offsides, but it was unsuccessful. They’d be given a bench minor penalty which gave the Wild their first powerplay of the game. Trevor Zegras served the penalty. The Wild didn’t capitalize but Vladar had to make a few big saves to keep the deficit at one.
The Wild got their second powerplay at the 4:34 mark of the second period as Owen Tippett got called for tripping. Vladar had to make a tough save from in tight and the Flyers had a few chances while shorthanded but couldn’t connect for the breakaways.
Ryan Hartman was called for tripping with only eight seconds remaining in the second period. This gave the Flyers their second powerplay. They, again, didn’t capitalize but got a few good shots on net. They’d now go 0 for 2 on the night.
Tippett tied the game up at one for the Flyers at the 7:10 mark of the third period. Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt made the initial save on him, but Tippett stayed with it and ultimately banked the puck off Wallstedt’s skate. Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak tallied assists.
The Wild got their third powerplay of the night at the 10:00 mark of the third as Jamie Drysdale got called for hooking. The Flyers did a great job of getting into shooting lanes and blocking shots on this one. A puck did go off of Vladar and then the crossbar, however.
No one scored another goal in regulation, so the game would go to overtime.
Noah Cates scored the game-winning goal at the 2:37 mark of the overtime period. Tyson Foerster fed him with a pass to the slot and Cates put a wrist shot under the blocker of Wallstedt. Foerster and Drysdale picked up assists. This gave the Flyers a 2-1 victory.
The Flyers went 0 for 2 on the powerplay but killed off all three of the Wild’s man advantages.
