The Philadelphia Flyers wrapped up their four-game road trip Saturday afternoon with a matinee at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers. Sam Ersson got the start in net. Denver Barkey made his NHL debut. Nikita Grebenkin drew into the lineup with Garnet Hathaway becoming a healthy scratch. Christian Dvorak was out due to an injury. The Rangers got on the board first, but the Flyers exploded for four goals in the second. They’d eventually blow a two-goal lead and lose in a shootout. The orange and black grabbed a point but dropped to 17-10-7 on the season.

The Rangers got the game’s first power play at the 13:57 mark of the first period as Carl Grundstrom was called for tripping. Ersson had to make three big saves, and the Rangers had a shot that went off the outside of the post.

Artemi Panarin gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at the 19:24 mark of the first. Mika Zibanejad found Panarin all alone in the slot from the boards, and Panarin put a wrist shot off the post and in past Ersson. Zibanejad received the only assist.

The Flyers got their first power play at the 5:17 mark of the second period as Will Cuylle got called for interference. They’d capitalize on the opportunity thanks to Travis Sanheim. Denver Barkey fed Sanheim with a pass to the slot, and he put a wrist shot past the blocker of Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin. Barkey and Matvei Michkov tallied assists.

Owen Tippett gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead at the 7:05 mark of the second. Barkey, from the boards, made a pass to Tippett, and he put a wrist shot under the blocker of Shesterkin from the high slot. Barkey and Cam York picked up assists.

Panarin was called for slashing at the 10:15 mark of the second period, which gave the Flyers their second power play. The Flyers would capitalize on the man advantage again. Noah Cates won the faceoff back to Jamie Drysdale. Drysdale then passed the puck to the right circle, where Zegras put a slap shot off the post and in past Shesterkin. Drysdale and Cates were given assists. This made the score 3-1 Flyers.

The Rangers got within one at the 12:23 mark of the second. Tippett turned the puck over to Panarin. Panarin then put a snapshot over the blocker of Ersson. This is his second goal of the game. The goal was unassisted. 3-2 Flyers.

Nicolas Deslauriers was given a two-minute penalty for boarding and a five-minute fighting penalty, and Brennan Othmann was given a five-minute fighting penalty at the 13:48 mark of the second period. This gave the Rangers their second power play. Ersson had to make a few saves on Panarin, and Scott Morrow and the Flyers did their job of clearing the puck down the ice.

The Flyers scored their first shorthanded goal of the season on the Rangers power play. Travis Sanheim’s pass went off the skate of Rodrigo Abols and through the legs of Shesterkin. This play happened after a Panarin turnover. Sanheim was given the lone assist. This made the score 4-2 Flyers.

Noah Laba got called for tripping at the 16:08 mark of the second period. This gave the Flyers their third power play. They didn’t record any shots on net, and the Rangers didn’t give them anything to work with as their penalty kill got aggressive.

The Rangers got their third power play at the 4:16 mark of the third period as Nick Seeler was called for hooking. The Flyers were able to clear the puck down the ice multiple times, and the Rangers only got one shot on net.

Vincent Trocheck got the Rangers within one at the 9:13 mark of the third. His backhander went off the skate of Grebenkin in front and through the legs of Ersson. Assists went to J.T. Miller and Gabe Perreault.

The Rangers got their fourth power play at the 17:00 mark of the third period as Rasmus Ristolainen got called for tripping. They tied the game up at four thanks to Zibanejad. Morrow fed him with a pass to the left circle, and Zibanejad put a slapshot past the blocker of Ersson. Morrow and Cuylle tallied assists.

No one else scored in regulation, so the game went to overtime. Just eight seconds into the overtime period, Panarin was called for slashing. This gave the Flyers their fourth power play. They got a few shots on net, but Shesterkin had all the answers. Travis Konecny also missed a few shots just wide.

Morrow got called for tripping at the 4:09 mark of the overtime period, which gave the Flyers their fifth power play. Shesterkin only had to make one save before the horn went off.

The game then went to a shootout. The Flyers sent out Zegras and Konecny, and the Rangers sent out Panarin and Trocheck. Both Panarin and Trocheck scored, giving the Rangers a five-four victory.

Flyers went two for five on the power play and killed off three of the four Rangers man advantages.

Ersson saved 23 of 27 shots, giving him an .852 save percentage.
