The dead thick of the offseason ensues, and the number one question every Flyers fan wants to know, when will Philippe Myers re-sign? What’s the holdup? Without further delay, here are our answers to your questions.
No timetable on Philippe Myers re-signing, but after MacKenzie Weegar has re-signed with the Florida Panthers this past week. A Myers signing should appear imminent. It is likely Myers will sign a bridge deal for $2.5-3 million per year, but remember star Defenseman Ivan Provorov did not sign a contract until the day before training camp. I’m not alarmed by this one bit.
I do believe there is a trade on the horizon for the orange and black. It is not a question of if, rather when. Unfortunately, teams are still uncertain in these uncertain times, so it’s making the market stagnant at the moment. There is uncertainty of when the season will start, and will be there fans or no fans. Hockey is a spectator sport, these franchises simply cannot continue to shell out money, and barely turn a profit. It just cannot continue to happen, and General Manager’s will not let it happen either.
Before the pause the Flyers had the 14th best in the league with a success rate of 20.8%. The Flyers were 4-52 following the pause in the bubble with the man advantage. That simply is not good enough.
Chuck Fletcher did say at his exit interview that the Power Play would be an area of focus in the offseason, thus the signing of Erik Gustafsson. I’m not sure how he will be implemented with the man advantage, but Fletcher has also indicated that Shayne Gostisbehere could see time with the PP, as well. Maybe a healthy Ghost (If he’s not traded) could help the stagnant PP.
With the Power Play Coach Michel Therrien entering his second season with the Flyers. Let’s see how this works out. Hopefully the Flyers break up Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek, and Sean Couturier with the man advantage, as it may be too predictable. A healthy Nolan Patrick and a healthy Oskar Lindblom could be the best additions to the PP. Let’s hope it revives the stagnant PP.
In the event that the PP does not improve, I think Therrien would be the casualty first, not Fletcher. Fletcher has done a solid job since taking over the helm for former General Manager Ron Hextall, he will be given leeway.
A healthy Nolan Patrick and Oskar Lindblom could be the best offseason additions made by Flyers’ General Manager Chuck Fletcher this year.
Anytime Nolan Patrick hits the ice for a scrimmage or practice it’s a good thing. It means he hasn’t suffered a setback, and that is one reason I continue to write favorable articles on him when he does scrimmage. I think Flyers fans should know he hasn’t suffered a setback, and Chuck Fletcher is absolutely correct when he says Nolan continues to get better and improve.
There are too many variables that could play in if Nolan is close to being cleared for contact or not. Patrick would have to ultimately get cleared by Flyers doctors for contact, so with no hockey currently being played at the moment, asides from Non-Contact scrimmages there really isn’t a need to clear him for contact yet. Expect this to take place right before training camp begins, or shortly thereafter. He has to properly get evaluated by Flyers doctors, and ultimately get cleared by his doctors, as well.
