It was yet another day of drills, skating, and scrimmages at Flyers Training Camp on Day 3. John Tortorella’s camp is tough, and it leaves no one behind. They may not be a contender this season, but this team will be well conditioned.
The refacing of the Flyers organization continues to take shape. Oskar Eklind has skated well, as has Matvei Michkov, to North ones surprise. This has fans pumped throughout the area. Morgan Frost and Rasmus Ristolainen stole training camp yesterday, while pumping in two goals a piece. Without further delay, here are some takeaways from day 3 of camp.
Ivan Fedotov is battling for a backup spot, as Samuel Ersson said yesterday that no job is safe in the NHL. Fedotov was dialed in from the start, and finished the day strong with only allowing a handful of goals
A savvy veteran Erik Johnson Mason rice plays yesterday, and I continued today. He’s very good on the poke, and he even scored a nice savvy goal from winning a puck battle along the boards.
Big Crowds
Big crowds returned today. The crowds have been scarce the past few days of training camp, with kids in school and parents working. One can sense the weekend, with how packed the Skate Zone was. Flyers fans are trying to get their first glimpse of Matvei Michkov.
Another player, like Eklind, that impressed today was 6’4 Rodrigo Abols. He is trying to earn a fourth line Center spot, or be the first recall in case of an injury. That’s one main reason why the organization did not re-sign Tanner Laczynski. Abols opened up the scoring today during the scrimmages, with a nice nice slick move.
Physicality
One can sense that Nic Deslauriers is fighting for his spot to stay in the lineup on the fourth line, as does Garnet Hathaway. Deslauriers was hitting everything that moved today, and camp invite Josh Zakreski and Louie Belpedio were just as involved. Heck, they even had a scrum. Deslauriers also potted two goals in the scrimmage, believe it or not.
Tortorella’s camps are different from other coaches camps, in a sense, he loves the physicality. He is open to physicality, whereas, other coaches are more timid about it. This is the best preparation to come up with a realistic game.
Olle Lycksell, who is vying for any spot on the team, got a little banged up today. He was struggling to get to the bench at point, however, both he and Brink have been good at camp in the early going.
Nick Seeler was overheard yelling today. He’s really into the scrimmages, and that was made evident today.
Tyson Foerster
Foerster is going to be a good player, and it was good to see him back to his old form today. He scored a goal in the scrimmage, which happens to be his first of the scrimmages thus far.
He potted 21 goals in his rookie season, so it was only a matter of time before he potted one. J R. Avon, Massimo Rizzo, and Bobby Brink scored in the shootout, so it’s good to see them practicing that again this camp.
