The Philadelphia Flyers have traded Ivan Fedotov to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2026 6th round pick. Columbus will be picking up his 3.275 million cap hit for the 2025-26 season.
The Flyers acquired goaltender Dan Vladar as a free agent in July and signed him to a two year deal.
Moving Fedotov is a step towards simplifying the Flyers goaltending situation which has been an issue since Carter Hart took leave from the team in January of 2024. The move also clears up additional cap space for the organization.
Things may have been different…
Things may have worked out differently for the 6′-7″ Russian netminder if his trip to the NHL went off as originally planned. There was a possibility Fedotov would make it to Flyers Training Camp on an entry level contract for the 2022-23 season. At that time the netminder had just come off of a wildly successful season in the KHL.
In 2022 his CSKA team won the Gagarin Cup Championship and Ivan received the award as the leagues best goaltender. That same year Fedotov was named to the 1st All Star Team. He also led a low scoring Russian team to win the silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
If Fedotov had rolled into Philly with that kind of momentum behind him who knows how things could have turned out for him here?
Harsh Reality
That July Fedotov was detained by the Russian authorities while loading his gear into his car outside of the local ice rink in Saint Petersburg. Eventually it came to be known that he would be fulfilling one year of mandatory military service before being returned to the CSKA Moscow hockey team. His trip to Philadelphia had taken a gigantic detour.
Instead of that smooth transition from KHL champion to NHL upstart Fedotov did not touch ice as a Flyer until April 1st 2024. He joined a team in turmoil that was quickly losing its grasp on what seemed an almost certain playoff berth.
During his time here Fedotov certainly showed glimpses of what he is capable of. There were nights where he was the reason the Flyers went home with the “W”.
To be blunt Fedotov’s time away from the sport did take a toll on his consistency. He also joined the team at a time where being a Flyers goaltender was not the easiest job in town.
The Flyers are in a rebuild. Better days are on the horizon but there is a certain flavor of gratitude that needs be reserved for the guys who went out there and gave it their best in a less than ideal situation.
A Class Act
It should not take Blue Jackets fans very long to realize that they’ve added a real class guy to their hockey community. Fedotov had a very humble and open way of bonding with Flyers Fans during his time here in Philadelphia. He was always very down to earth and easily shared his sense of humor with the Flyers faithful.
At the end of the 2024-25 season the Flyers nominated Ivan Fedotov to be the recipient of the Masterton Memorial Trophy, an NHL award which recognizes perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport of ice hockey. Ivan is always a gentleman and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
The above post was the first time Fedotov entered the ice for warm-ups in front of the home town crowd. He watched from the bench as the Chicago Blackhawks blasted the Flyers 5-1.
