Philadelphia Flyers Rookie Camp takes to the ice Thursday September 11th at 11:00 AM. This my friends will be the unofficial start of hockey season. Opening night is not until October 9th when the Flyers faceoff against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions but this is where the long road begins.

Development camp this past July had such a high level of intensity to it. Every single player was all in and the excitement was absolutely contagious. By the end of the 5-on-5 scrimmage finale on closing night Flyers Fans were on their feet cheering and banging on the glass in a show of appreciation for the effort put forth. Lets hope that level of energy carries over into the start of rookie camp and well beyond.

Forward Jett Luchanko will return to Flyers Rookie Camp again this year.

Who to look for

There will be some names already quite familiar to Flyers Fans attending camp this year. It will be interesting to see how far into Training Camp some of these players can stick around. Some may possibly even make it to the finish line, earning as spot on the roster for the season opener in Florida.

Players like Jett Luchanko, Denver Barkey, and Oliver Bonk will draw tons of attention. There’s a lot of talent on this roster. These hungry young hockey players will be out there doing their best to get noticed and leave a lasting impression.

Timing

Jett Luchanko will be skating but he is still getting over the groin injury that kept him out of development camp this summer. These things take time to heal, but the timing on this couldn’t be much worse for the speedy center. At only 19 years of age he is still too young play for the Phantoms. The rule change that would allow that does not take effect till next season. The option of playing another season with the struggling Guelph Storm does not seem ideal either.

Last season Luchanko earned a nine game tryout with the Flyers out of camp. Tortorella had him shifting against Connor McDavid and he did not look at all out of place doing so. After the tryout Jett returned to play out the season with the Storm.

It’s hard to find an upside to him returning yet again to a situation that does not match his level of skill. Lingering there can’t be good for his development. He’s a super fast dynamic play maker with great hands and eyes in the back of his head. In my humble opinion the organization needs to be very careful not to let him fall through the cracks.

Top Picks

Jack Nesbitt who was chosen 12th overall by the Flyers in the 1st round of this year’s draft was a standout at Development Camp and will be skating with the squad this week. Porter Martone who was scooped up by the Flyers with their 1st pick at #6 will be playing at Michigan State this season and will not be attending Flyers camp this year.

Flyers rookie camp will also see the return of goaltending prospect Carson Bjarnason.

Between the Pipes

It should also be interesting to get a look at the progress of talented young goaltender Carson Bjarnason. Carson had a strong camp last year capped off with a stellar performance playing 30 minutes against the Washington Capitals in a preseason match up. Goalies can take time to develop and teams are usually quite cautious about not rushing the process.

Bjarnason who was drafted by the Flyers in 2023 has been playing with the Brandon Wheat Kings since 2021. His numbers have gotten consistently stronger every year that he has guarded the net for the Kings. Last season he posted a GAA of 2.93 along with a .913 SV% over 40 games.

At 20 yeas of age Bjarnason continues to do all the right things. As opposed to Aleksei Kolosov who seems to continue making questionable decisions concerning his career in the NHL. Kolosov will not be attending rookie camp.

The Schedule

The rookies will have one day of on ice practice this Thursday and a morning skate Friday before heading to Allentown to take on the Rangers rookie squad at the PPL Center on Friday night at 7:00 PM. There will be a rematch on Saturday evening at 5:00 PM leading up to a day off from on ice activities on Sunday.

Rookie Camp will resume Monday and Tuesday September 15th and 16th at the Flyers Training Center. All sessions at the Voorhees rink are free and open to the public. Tickets are currently on sale for the games in Allentown.
