5’8 winger Connor McClennon from Western Hockey League’s Winnipeg Ice was selected by Chuck Fletcher in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He could have easily been a mid third round selection due to his shot, but his size may have slid him down the draft board a bit. The Flyers could use a scorer, hence the selection of McClennon who tallied 21 goals for the Winnipeg Ice last season. He also chipped in 28 apples. The young man is talented and this was a great selection in the sixth round.

“I model my game after Travis Konecny. He has a shoot first mentality. Even if he wasn’t a Flyer he would be good to model my game after. He’s a proven goal scorer at the highest level.”

“(Laughing, Lots of laughing) I wish I can say that was true. Watching the last few weeks, what number 97 is doing is pretty crazy. To do anything similar to what he’s doing would be pretty crazy.”

“Overall improving my strength. Being a smaller guy making the next step, even in juniors, that’s what I need to focus on. The biggest thing for me is to get bigger and stronger, but focus on both ends of the ice in Winnipeg.”

“My favorite NHL player of all time is Ryan Smith. He’s always really good to me. Ever since I met him I wore/wear the number 94. He was such a nice guy to me when I was young, and gave me some good advice to continue to do what I’m doing.”

He did not mention Alex Debrincat, Connor mentioned Travis Konecny. “Even if he wasn’t a Flyer he would be good to model my game after. He’s a proven goal scorer at the highest level.”

“I’ve grown up on a farm my whole life here in Alberta. It’s something I’m passionate about. Hopefully, I stay in hockey fir as long as I can.”
