Mason Millman can carry the puck up and get things going in the offensive zone. Whether it’s a dump and chase, or putting a solid shot on the net and getting things going, in his 2nd season with an ECHL affiliate, Reading has 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) in 30 games. Last season Mason played in 49 games in Reading, along with 12 games in Lehigh Valley.
The young talented defenseman might not be the biggest but he uses all of his 6’1” and 174 pounds to his advantage to break through and stand up to the opposing guys coming into the offensive zone. Millman is skilled at puck handling and bringing the puck up to neutral ice. His passes are also tape-to-tape good, and get things up and moving. His work on the power play gets him a lot of open shots in the high slot and point.
The 21-year-old needs to be alongside someone big that plays a big shutdown defensive game. He said it himself once in an “OHL Quick Hits” interview. He said during the interview that was published on May 20th, 2020, “… someone who’s just big and plays such a good shutdown defensive game… I’m not the biggest kid, I’m decent size but I’m on the go up and down the ice, back and forth and I just need someone who could save my back a few times and keep me under control.”Â

The best defensive pairing would be Rasmus Ristolainen who is in his 1st year left of his 5-year contract extension. The gifted defenseman is currently in the 2nd year of his 3-year entry-level contract. I think it’d be an interesting pairing with Millman and someone like the size that he needs, in Ristolainen.
