The Philadelphia Flyers took to the ice this morning at their practice facility in Voorhees getting set for the Penguins visit to Philly tonight. It was a “morning skate” that looked like a practice. The mood was very upbeat and the pace was vigorous. The coaching staff worked with the team and ran through drills as some players worked in smaller groups on specifics areas of focus.
The Penguins are coming in at 19-15-4, the Flyers current record is 20-13-6. This will be the 3rd meeting of the teams so far this season. The Flyers won both games of a home-and-home series in early December although both games were very tight. The first contest ended in a shoot-out win the second was won in overtime.
The Flyers are coming off of an emotionally satisfying victory over the Calgary Flames this past Saturday afternoon. The organization paid tribute to the legacy of Ed Snider the late owner and chairman of the team. It was an important game for the whole Philadelphia hockey community who share an ongoing gratitude to Mr. Snider for his great example and contributions to the City of Philadelphia and the sport of hockey. Travis Konecny scored the game winning goal short-handed and the arena packed with Flyers Fans blew the roof off. It was the kind of game Mr. Snider would have highly approved of.
The Flyers have a long history against their cross state rivals. Many of the players on the current Flyers roster were not here for a lot of it. Many of the Penguins were. The Penguins roster still features many names that Flyers Fans are all too familiar with. Both games this season have been intense and entertaining hopefully tonight continues the trend.
It’s go time
The mood at the rink this morning was definitely up and the energy was high. The team looks well rested and ready to go. Saturday’s win marked the end of a rough stretch for the Orange and Black. The Flyers face-off against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight Monday January 8th, 7PM at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia.
