Brian Elliott was in goal Saturday afternoon as the Flyers opened a two game series against the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo. He was able to make 23 saves en route to a shutout in a convincing 3-0 Flyers win.
There was no scoring in the first perod until the Flyers got on the board with a great wrist shot by Sean Couturier, assisted by Travis Sanheim at 14:22 of the period. The Sabres killed two power plays and the Flyers killed one during the period and there was no further scoring.
The Flyers protected the one goal lead through the first two thirds of the second period. Eliott was able to keep the Sabres off the board. Shayne Gostisbehere was able to extend the Flyers lead to two goals after creating some space and putting the puck past Sabre goalie Carter Hutton. The goal was assisted by Sean Couturier and James van Reimsdyk. With one minute and six seconds left in the period, Oskar Lindblom made a quick stellar pass to spring Scott Laughton who got behind the defense and scored on a breakaway to make the score 3-0 Flyers. Laughton moved the puck from his forehand to backhand and put the puck between goalie Hutton’s legs and into the net.
For once the Flyers penalty killing did an excellent job. The Sabres got some good looks on the goal in the third period, but Eliott was able to make all the saves. The Flyers were able to kill off a late penalty and the shutout was preserved with a 3-0 Flyers win.
The Flyers improved to 10-4-3 on the season while Buffalo dropped to 6-9-3.
NEXT UP: Flyers will meet again in game two of their two game series tomorrow at 3:00pm EST vs. Buffalo on NBC Sports Philadelphia and ESPN+.
