Dennis Gilbert was the last Flyers cut, until Cam York’s unfortunate lower body injury. York might miss the season opener against the Florida Panthers, thus the Flyers will then thrust Gilbert in York’s spot. Here’s a quick breakdown of the Flyers opening night roster:

  • Date of Waiver for Dennis Gilbert: October 4, 2025
  • Context: Gilbert, a 28-year-old left-shot defenseman signed to a one-year, $875,000 contract with the Flyers on July 1, 2025, was brought in as depth on the blue line. He has 111 career NHL games across multiple teams (Blackhawks, Avalanche, Flames, Sabres, Senators) but limited production (3 goals, 17 assists). With the Flyers’ defensive depth chart crowded—featuring players like Travis Sanheim, Jamie Drysdale, and emerging prospects like Emil Andrae and Oliver Bonk—Gilbert was likely seen as expendable for an AHL assignment to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, until York’s injury.
  • Status: Gilbert cleared waivers, and will fill in until York is made available.

Why This Cut?

The Flyers have submitted to the league their final roster decisions, and Gilbert’s physical style (known for hits and blocked shots) didn’t originally secure a top-7 spot amid competition from younger, higher-upside options. However, an injury to Cam York has Gilbert making the opening night roster. Pre-free agency reports even flagged him as a potential waiver candidate if he underperformed in camp.

Jett Luchanko, Noah Juulsen, Nikita Grebenkin, and Rodrigo Abols have all made the team, with Egor Zamula fitting into the opening night role, as well.
