The Philadelphia Flyers find themselves in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 21-12-7 and 49 points. With only one point behind the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders and four points behind the Carolina Hurricanes, the orange and black are sitting pretty through the first three-plus months of the season. A lot has been announced through the team and media, so let’s get all caught up, shall we?

Matvei Michkov Injury
Flyers fans went into a panic Monday morning when it was announced that Matvei Michkov was a no-show at practice. No one knew why he missed, and we were all hoping for the best. Head coach Rick Tocchet told the media that Michkov had blocked a shot with his left foot in the Flyers last game against the Edmonton Oilers and had some swelling. Thankfully, the X-rays he had done came back negative. Michkov returned to practice this morning (Jan. 6) and reported that he felt “good.” Michkov will be a game-time decision for tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Olympic Candidates
The 2026 Winter Olympics are right around the corner, and the Flyers have four players who will be representing their countries. Those players are:
D Travis Sanheim-Canada
D Rasmus Ristolainen-Finland
F Rodrigo Abols-Latvia
G Dan Vladar-Czechia

Christian Dvorak news
Flyers forward Christian Dvorak signed a five-year, $25.75M contract extension Monday night. This will keep him with the orange and black until the end of the 2030-31 season unless he’s traded at some point. He’ll be 35 at that point.
Dvorak joined the Flyers on July 1, 2025, as he signed a one-year deal after becoming an unrestricted free agent. The 6’1″, 190 lb centre from Palos, Illinois, was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes back in 2014 with the 28th pick in the second round (58th overall). He’d play for the Coyotes for five seasons before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens at the 2022 Draft. In 573 career games played, Dvorak has tallied 114 goals and 160 assists for 274 points and holds a plus-minus rating of -52.
When news broke, Flyers fans took to social media to share their mixed feelings. Let’s be honest. Dvorak is having himself a great 2025-26 season so far. He currently has 25 points (9G, 16A) and has a plus-minus rating of 8. Having linemates such as Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecny certainly helps when it comes to picking up points. With the speed of Konecny and the hands of Zegras, this line has certainly played a role in the Flyers success this season.
However, there are cons to this extension as well. As we all know, as you age in hockey, your performance declines. Perhaps not for all players, but you get the idea. Dvorak is currently 29 years old and will be 30 next month. It’s unlikely that his point production will steady or increase as the seasons go by. Being locked up for five years might be a little much.
For those who haven’t seen or read, the contract includes a no-trade clause for the first two seasons, a limited no-trade clause for the third and fourth seasons, and no-trade protection for the fifth season. What do you think of this deal?
