The NHL season is winding down, along with the Philadelphia Flyers playoff hopes. They are just about mathematically eliminated from the playoffs at this point. They faced the New Jersey Devils tonight and there is lots to talk about. Let’s get into it.
Sleep-skating has been a constant thing this year and the lack of structure leads to to not being able to keep up with the opposing team’s speed. The Flyers defense has certainly had it struggles keeping up with opposing forwards and on this night, nothing changed. I had the pleasure of speaking with Ryan, the Co-founder of BSing Sports Podcast, his take on the Flyers regressing skating “ They looked like they were skating in mud. Slow, lethargic, just going through the motions like it’s summer practice. They lacked hustle and don’t seem like they want to be there”. A great quote, from a great crew. Next season, Chuck Fletcher and the rest of the band will have to find a way to get their players to keep up with some of these opposing teams-enough is enough.
Travis Konecny nets a goal for the first time in a while. Unfortunately, it was too little too late to mount a comeback. One of the big things I noticed about this goal was that, he has now finally hit double digits, getting his 10th goal of the very disappointing season. We can only hope he adds a few more and continues the success into next season.
Alex Lyon not so lion. Lyon gets the nod tonight for the Flyers in a must win game. With the big announcement earlier in the day, that it is the official end of Carter Harts season. Lyon will go to see more ice time and that could be a bad thing. Lyon showed exactly why he is a minor league goaltender tonight. Seeing 19 shots and letting up 4 goals. Phantoms goalie Felix Sandstrom had played quite well and deserves more playing time here with the Flyers. I certainly noticed that Alex Lyon let up some soft goals at a very costly time. Without those key saves, the team could never recover and bring the game home.
