Chuck Fletcher spoke to the media today, as he answered question after question. One of the hot topics of conversation was of course the retired Matt Niskanen. Sam Carchidi asked Fletcher if there is a possibility that Niskanen would return, since they have had talks once every few weeks:

“It’s good to stay in touch with Matt. It’s pretty clear he is not returning.” – Chuck Fletcher

Fletcher further stated that the Flyers have not terminated Niskanen’s contract, and have left the door open for a return just in case he changed his mind.

Would Niskanen help an inconsistent blue line? Absolutely, without a doubt Niskanen would provide a boost to the defensive unit. Niskanen may not be what he used to be, but he is an upgrade over the current defenseman that are in and out of the lineup each night. Moreover, he would also be the cheapest addition for Fletcher to add, seeings that almost every team will be in need of a top pairing defenseman by the trade deadline. This makes the price skyrocket to obtain such a player.

With the door not totally shut, let’s hope that Niskanen in the near future changes his mind. One can only hope, and one can wish upon Niskanen’s return. Either way the Flyers are in need of an upgrade on the back end that much is true.
