The Flyers 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets was not nearly as bad as the final score would seem to implicate. In fact they were looking for the tying goal with just a minute and forty seconds left in regulation. Unfortunately Columbus scored twice on the empty net as Carter Hart watched from the bench. The Flyers were coming off of a big win on Tuesday when they soundly defeated the St. Louis Blues by the score of 5-1..

So far this week the highs are high, the lows are low, and there is a whole lot of hockey yet to be played over the weekend and into next week. The Flyers have Friday to regroup then back-to-back matinee games at home on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a road stretch starting Tuesday. To hockey fans in Philadelphia this sounds like a lot of fun. To a hockey team who is pushing to continue overachieving against the odds while still riddled with injuries this probably sounds like a lot of work. Hopefully it will be both.

Tonight was not the team’s best effort but there were some positive takeaways. The Flyers out shot the Blue Jackets 34-29. Tony DeAngelo and Ivan Provorov scored the Flyers only two goals. Both goals were scored from way in close by the two players on the top defensive pairing. These guys log a ton of ice time, just under and just over 25 minutes each on the night. Both are so adept on their feet, even away from the play their technical skating ability is really enjoyable to watch. Their speed and agility gives them both the opportunity to jump in offensively. As they get more familiar with each other this can only get better, and a little less risky. As far as injuries, Joel Farabee is looking like his healthy self again which is a big plus, and Cam Atkinson took part in the morning skate today.

Other quick hits: There was a pause in the first period while Nicolas Deslauriers and Mathieu Olivier had a heavyweight bout, holy cow. Zack MacEwen is looking really good with the puck, hard work paying off. And Wade Allison managed to land a few nice hits while still working on his disciplined “North South” game as publicly demanded by Head Coach John Tortorella. There were some real downsides as well but after a 5-2 loss that should already be pretty obvious. They put themselves in a 3 goal deficit really early on. Turnovers are still a problem. The top line had a rough night… But hey there are plenty of opportunities right around the corner to get things back on track. It’s hockey season folks, and we’re in the thick of it!
