Flyers bring down Avalanche
Flyer win fast loose game in Colorado. The sticks are clicking again.

Joel Farabee immediately came out with jump as he and Atkinson almost completed a 2 on 1 opportunity as soon as the game got underway. This set the tone for a night full of odd man rushes, open ice, and undisciplined defensive play at both ends.

Farabee

Last year much was said about Farabee missing summer workouts and training camp before returning from a major injury. “You can’t get that back during the rigorous regular season” was what we were told. The proof is in the pudding and Farabee looks to have picked things up where he left off before the lost time. You can really see the difference this year as he was able to come into this season prepared and well conditioned. Joel Farabee is once again a huge asset and a key part of this roster. He also knows how to bounce back from a benching with grit, determination, and class.

Hart

Carter Hart was having an unusual night between the pipes. He was making the big stops but absent was his usual steady rebound control. The game itself was a bit loose and scattered so Hart’s play fit the theme of the night. At one point early on Hart made a save with the butt end of his stick that took his stick right out of his hand and carried it into the corner. It was just a game full of odd bounces. He didn’t have a bad night in net, he just didn’t look himself.

Late goal

Teams really hate giving up goals early or late in a period. It’s a focus issue sometimes and it can be deflating. With just over two minutes left in the 1st period Sean Couturier threaded a beautiful pass through traffic to Travis Konecny in front of the Colorado net. It was all of Konecny’s favorite things. Coming down the ice on the right side, getting the cross ice pass, and shooting the puck mid-height glove side. It was Konecny’s 15th goal of the season.

Later goal

The Flyers would have loved to have ended the period on that high note but they didn’t. This is where focus comes into play. Shifts right after a goal and staying sharp till the horn. With one minute left in the 1st, Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon beat Carter Hart with a wrist shot. Hart seemed to have made the initial save but the puck hit and bounced over his glove and into the net. The period ended with the game tied at one.

Tippett

Owen Tippett regained the Flyers lead 9:01 into the 2nd period. Bobby brink hit Tippett with a brilliant bank pass off the boards. Tippett forced himself with speed down the left hand side. His initial shot was stopped by Colorado netminder Ivan Prosvetov. Tippett picked up his own rebound and snapped it home. It took a little bit of time for Tippett to get back to his scoring ways this season but once he cracked the ice the goals have been flowing. Tippett is a strong hockey player who makes a whole lot of room for himself out on the ice. He reads the play really well and has a great knack for anticipating where things are headed.

Sanheim

Just over two minutes later it was Travis Sanheim putting the Flyers up 3-1. Morgan Frost had a nice feed from behind the net hitting Sanheim who ripped a wrister from the dot that beat Prosvetov high far-side. It was a perfectly placed shot with a lot of heat. Sanheim is having a solid year developing into a leadership role amongst the defensive core. Travis was able to shake off and bounce back from his big contract year. Finally getting that big deal can be like a lead weight around your neck in this town for some reason.

Giving it right back

Once again just over a minute later Colorado scored to bring them back to within one. Josh Manson unleashed a laser that went in over Harts head. The 2nd period ended with the Flyers up 3-2.

The 3rd period was a lot of fun to watch and I am pretty sure it didn’t make either coach very happy. There were break-downs at both ends of the ice. All night the odd man rushes were out of control. At one point Hart made a save on a 3 on 1 break. Prosvetov made two stops on a 2 on 0 breakaway for the Flyers.

Konecny

Travis Konecny is having another fine year. TK’s speed is such a great asset to the team. His goal scoring ability the past two seasons is relentless. Konecny has always been a fast skater. In fact before last season his feet sometimes seemed too fast for his hands. He could get himself to where the action was in no time. But on many occasions his feet were taking the play into the next direction before his hands had total control of the puck.

Travis Konecny has matured to the point where his hands and feet are totally in synch. He is an incredibly dangerous hockey player in all situations. Even shorthanded opposing teams need to watch him like a hawk. Travis Konecny is increasingly becoming a major NHL star.

Almost halfway through the 3rd period Konecny used his speed to pull away from the action on a breakaway with Colorado resorting to pulling him down. TK was awarded a penalty shot. He came in real slow breaking far to the left hand side and cutting across the net stick handling a ton before putting the puck mid-height glove side to put his team up 4-2. The puck hit the goaltender’s pad but still managed to bounce up and over slowly crossing the goal line. It was a night of strange bounces.

Less than a minute later Joel Farabee scored to put this game out of reach. Bobby Brink had another beautiful assist. The Flyers kept pace with the Avalanche all night long and did not seem to be affected by the skinny high altitude Colorado air. Final score Flyers 5 Avalanche 2.

Extra Credit: This Flyers team breaks into the offensive zone with more consistent ease than any line-up we’ve seen in a long time. They are really adept at turning play around in the neutral zone. They use the stretch pass consistently to spring breakaways and odd man rushes. It is rare to see them resort to the dump and chase. The Flyers are a fun hockey team to watch. This is John Tortorella’s team and we are really starting to see the fruits of his labor.
