The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired Tony DeAngelo and a 7th round pick for a 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick and 4th round pick.

Here Is The Trade Breakdown Below:

To Philadelphia: Tony DeAngelo, Seventh round pick in this year’s draft (Alexis Gendron).

To Carolina: Fourth round pick in this year’s draft (101st overall), third round pick in 2023 (the least valuable of the three picks), and a second round pick in 2024.

It was also announced that DeAngelo has received a 2 year contract extension with the Flyers with an average annual value of 5 million dollars.

Details To Be Aware Of:

DeAngelo, played with the Hurricanes during the past season and posted 10 goals and 41 assists for 51 points in 64 regular season games. Quite impressively he led the Hurricanes defense in goals, assists and points. While putting up a plus-minus rating of +30.

The offensive defenseman also had his best season from a playmaking standpoint in 2021-2022 with 41 assists. Along with, a career-high in relation to points per game at 0.80 pts per game played.

In regards to the value of the trade the Flyers did give up a considerable amount of future assets with the 2nd (24), 3rd (23), 4th (22) for DeAngelo. However, I believe the extension is a fair one. Especially for a right handed shooting defenseman who typically puts up 50 pts in a season.

The main aspect of DeAngelo’s skill set that will certainly be a welcome addition to the Flyers is his Power-Play prowess. 20 of his 51 points came on the Power-Play this past season with the Hurricanes. He is also entirely capable of quarterbacking a Power-Play quite efficiently with his vision, ability to walk the blue line with the puck, hold the puck in the offensive zone and, his playmaking ability.

Due to the Flyers Power-Play being ranked the worst in the league with a 12.6 % efficiency rate throughout the 2021-2022 regular season. Acquiring a Power-Play quarterback with the talent of DeAngelo certainly must have been an attractive trade to make from a Flyers perspective.

As a Power-Play quarterback who can confidently facilitate the puck such as DeAngelo should improve the team’s man advantage units. As well as, their ability to be dangerous in relation to creating high danger scoring opportunities moving forward.

The most interesting aspect of this trade will likely be how Tony DeAngelo meshes with Head Coach John Tortorella moving forward. DeAngelo has not been known to be a defensive stalwart in his own end or with his play away from the puck. It will be intriguing to see if Tortorella can get more out of DeAngelo’s defensive game and his commitment to two-way play.

Tony DeAngelo Interview Transcript:

What is your reaction to joining the Flyers?

It’s a dream come true for me. I was born in Jersey, but really my entire family besides myself comes from Philly. That’s where we lived. Been a Flyers fan since the day I can remember. Like I said, it’s a dream come true. I just posted on Instagram. I could not be more excited to put the jersey over my shoulders. I’m looking forward to it.

What do you think you can bring to the team next season?

I’m going to bring the puck moving. I think I do a really good job moving the puck. I’ve been on the power play a lot of times in my career. Obviously, that’s a coach’s decision. I run a good power play. I think the Flyers are looking for that kind of player. I can fill a good void for them there. I can move the puck out of the zone. I try to make offensive plays. At the same time, I think I’ve taken a lot of strides on the defensive side of the puck too. That’s the main part of the game as a defenseman. You have got to defend. I think I’ve gotten better and better each year. I continue to improve and plan on improving even more this year. Total package in the game. I think the fans would appreciate the most of me is that no matter what I do, I have passion for the game. The compete level that I have and the will to do whatever it takes to win. I think that’s the Philly mentality. I think that’s what I can bring and they will appreciate that.

Are you familiar with any of the Flyers?

Haysey’s one of my real, real good buddies. We’ve been super close since we met playing for the Rangers. I’m really looking forward to getting back with him. I know Joel. Joel plays on my charity teams in the summer. Looking forward to seeing him get back healthy and getting back out there. You meet so many guys throughout your career playing around the league. Even guys you don’t really know, you kind of know them a little bit just by talking to people. I don’t think it will be a too crazy adjustment coming into the locker room to feel comfortable.
