Denver Barkey is having good season for a renown program in the London Knights. Respectively, Barkey has 17 goals and 24 assists on the season in 28 games played, and his success has him salivating for even more success.
Due to his great season thus far, he has been selected to the World Canada Junior Championship preliminary selection camp. Some are probably pondering what this is, it’s like a training camp or tryout for the upcoming WJC Tournament.
Unfortunately, Barkey’s grandpa, Randy Legge, passed away yesterday. Barkey, I’m sure is filled with lot’s of emotions, as one can imagine. However, he will play today at 3pm for Team Canada. It’s a shame, Legge meant a lot to Barkey, “My parents are a huge inspiration. My grandpa also inspired me. Kind of see the Pro when he played in the NHL. That was one of his dreams (For his Grandpa to make the NHL),” Barkey said to me in an exclusive interview last week.
Barkey’s Grandpa played professional hockey. Randy Legge, Denver’s Grandpa, played for the New York Rangers, and wound up playing 12 games for the Rangers during his professional career. Legge was a right-handed defenseman, believe it or not, as he stood at 5’11.
The Flyers second pick in the third round was Denver Barkey. He’s a Center that plays in the OHL for the London Knights, and is a teammate of a Flyers first round selection in Oliver Bonk. This kid can absolutely fly, and score some big goals in big moments. There is lots of upside to this young man, and the Flyers can be patient with his development.
Let’s hope that Barkey excels today. He is a courageous young man. His family means the world to him, and that was quite evident in my interview with him last week. Nothing comes easy in life, and he understands that.
To Barkey and his family. We are here for you, always will be.
