Dan Vladar is single-handedly “saving” the Flyers’ season, and he’s been their best player. Vladar has been the most reliable performer by far—essentially the reason they’ve stayed competitive and in the playoff conversation longer than many expected.
The 28-year-old Czech goalie signed a two-year, $6.7M deal with Philadelphia as a free agent in July 2025 after backing up in Calgary. He came looking for a true No. 1 opportunity and has seized it.

He’s outperformed expectations, posted positive Goals Saved Above Expected (around 9+ per some advanced stats), and earned praise as a potential team MVP, leader in the locker room, and even a long-term solution in net. Teammates and coaches have highlighted his consistency, big saves, and leadership (on and off the ice).
The Flyers have improved dramatically from last season’s historically bad Goaltending (.879 team SV%, one of the worst in modern NHL history). Vladar has stabilized the crease, and the defense has limited high-danger chances better than before. However, the team as a whole has struggled to generate enough consistent offense or secondary Goaltending depth (Ersson and others haven’t been reliable backups).

- He’s kept them in the wild-card mix at points (e.g., within striking distance of spots), but the season hasn’t been “saved” into a deep run—more like elevated from a rebuild/low floor to a respectable, competitive one.
Vladar has absolutely transformed the Goaltending situation and given the Flyers a legitimate chance they wouldn’t have had otherwise. He’s thriving in his first full starter role and looks like a gem for the organization. But “saving the season” implies carrying a flawed roster all the way to glory—that’s a team effort, and right now the supporting cast hasn’t fully delivered. Vladar’s the brightest spot in orange and black this year.
