It wasn’t pretty at first in the first period of the game, but the Flyers held on for a much needed point against a very talented New York Islanders team. The Islanders won in a shoot out, but the Flyers earned an important point.
“Everybody says play 60 minutes,” Voracek said following the game. “It’s a hockey cliche. I’ve never seen a team control all 60 minutes. “It’s disappointing not to get the second point,” Claude Giroux said. “Carter was solid tonight. Very solid.”
The first period got off to a slow start as the Islanders out shot the Flyers, and had a bunch of opportunities to score. 12:01 in to the opening period, the Islanders got on board with an absolute beautiful back hand pass by Matt Martin through the slot to Anthony Beauvillier to create a 1-0 Islanders lead.
Flyers goalie Carter Hart had some great saves in the first six minutes in the second period. With 4:20 left, in the second period, the Islanders secured another goal when Anthony Beauvillier took a wrist that went low through Flyers goaltender Carter Hart’s legs for a goal to extend the Islanders lead to 2-0.
Just 6:38 into the third period, the Flyers got on board with a great pass by Travis Konecny to Claude Giroux, as Giroux made an amazing back hand shot that went over Islanders goalie Illya Sorokin’s shoulder to cut the Islanders lead to one.
With 9:28 left in the third period, the Flyers came storming back to tie things up at two as Giroux waisted a shot that blew by Sorokin to make the score 2-2. Jakub Voracek and Travis Konecny got the assists.
Hart made a number of great saves especially with the glove to keep the game tied the rest of the third period and through the overtime, as he returned to form.
The shootout was scoreless through the first three rounds until the Islanders got the job done in the shootout when the Islanders Matthew Barzal ripped a shot past Hart. Jakub Voracek was unable to score in the bottom of the fourh round and the Islanders got the extra point.
The Flyers are now 17-15-4.
