Cam York, a 24-year-old restricted free agent defenseman, signed a five-year, $25.75 million contract extension with the Flyers, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $5.15 million through the 2029-30 NHL season.

This deal is considered team-friendly due to the rising NHL salary cap, projected to increase from $88 million to $113.5 million by 2027-28, potentially making York’s cap hit a bargain for a top-pairing defenseman, “I love Philadelphia. It’s my home, I’m comfortable there,” York said after signing his new contract.

York, the 14th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, has been a key part of the Flyers’ defense, averaging 20:56 of ice time per game in his career and posting 77 points (19 goals, 58 assists) in 235 games, “We’ve added depth, we’ve added skill. I feel like we’re about to break out,” York said.

The contract provides York with long-term security while sacrificing two years of unrestricted free agency, and it aligns with the Flyers’ shift from rebuilding to contending, as evidenced by recent moves like acquiring Trevor Zegras and signing Christian Dvorak and Dan Vladar. Speaking of Zegras, “We were high school troublemakers together, really good friends,” York said of Zegras. “He brings a skill set that we haven’t seen probably in awhile. I think it’s going to be really good for our team.”

General manager Danny Briere praised York’s development and leadership potential, while York expressed excitement about staying in Philadelphia, calling it home and emphasizing the team’s promising direction under new coach Rick Tocchet.
