Brad Shaw, who served as the Flyers’ interim Head Coach for the final nine games of the 2024-25 season, will not return to the team’s coaching staff under newly appointed Head Coach Rick Tocchet.

I’m hearing, as first reported by Phly Sports Charlie O’ Connor, this was Shaw’s decision. Shaw, ascended to the top of the league in short-handed goals during the 2023-24 season, largely due to his work with the team’s defense and penalty kill. Despite his success and interest in the head coaching role, the Flyers chose Tocchet, and Shaw opted not to stay on as an Assistant. He is now exploring other opportunities, with interest from several NHL teams.

Shaw’s work with the Flyers’ defense and penalty kill was standout during his tenure. In the 2023-24 season, his system led the Flyers to the top of the NHL in short-handed goals, showcasing his ability to optimize backend structure and execution. His expertise in defensive schemes and special teams made him a key asset, which likely explains the interest from other NHL teams now that he’s not returning to Philly.
There is little doubt in my mind that he will land on his feet in no time, as he highly regarded as one of the top Assistant Coaches in the NHL.
