Approximately one year ago Matvei Michkov, a future superstar, threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Phillies game against the New York Yankees on July 29, 2024, at Citizens Bank Park. The 19-year-old Russian hockey star, who recently arrived in Philadelphia at the time, threw a strike to Phillies pitcher Tyler Phillips, earning a warm reception from the crowd.

Michkov, wearing a Phillies jersey with his name and #39, was joined by teammates Cam York, Tyson Foerster, and Joel Farabee. He also gifted Phillies manager Rob Thomson a signed hockey stick and met pitcher Zack Wheeler. This event marked Michkov’s first major public appearance in Philadelphia, showcasing his integration into the city’s sports culture.

Believe it or not, Michkov indeed had an impressive rookie season with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2024-25. He recorded 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in 80 games, leading all NHL rookies in goals and even-strength scoring (46 points) while tying for second in total points (63). His 2.83 points per 60 minutes topped the Flyers and outpaced many peers from the 2023 draft class, including Connor Bedard.

Michkov’s highlights included three overtime goals, tying an NHL record for teenagers, and earning NHL Rookie of the Month honors in October and February. His performance landed him on the 2024-25 NHL All-Rookie Team, a testament to his immediate impact despite limited ice time (averaging 16:41 per game) and a struggling Flyers power play (14.5% efficiency). Some of his standout moments, like a backhand goal against Buffalo and a breakaway score against Washington, showcased his elite offensive skill and playmaking ability.
